Description

When the call came mid-harvest offering up the entire Patina Vineyard, winemaker Sam Renzaglia said yes without blinking - even if it did mean a sudden mountain of fruit to deal with. And we're glad they did, because this Chardonnay is a ripper.

Grown on a high-altitude, cool-climate site near Orange, the fruit comes off lean, tight and full of potential. It was whole bunch pressed straight to concrete, no fancy temp control, no fiddling. Wild ferment, full malolactic, left on lees through winter untouched, then bottled without fining or filtration.

You get stone fruit, citrus and a little florals, but it’s the texture and balance that are most impressive - it has a really lovely flow and balance to it.

This is excellent. Excellent concentration of fruit and personality plus. Honeysuckle, lychee, peach, citrus and nectarine with cream and sweet cedar-spice notes. Full box and dice in a way, but controlled and cohesive. All this at 12.5% alcohol. Like this wine a lot.

We were lucky and crazy enough to get the call from Gerald Naef half way through harvest offering the entire Patina Vineyard to us that year, consisting of Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Merlot. A significant and unexpected uptick in our resultant production threatened, but the prospects of working with the fruit from this rugged, meticulously managed and high quality vineyard was too good to turn down.

WINEMAKING NOTES

The Chardonnay, in this case was whole bunch pressed and sent to concrete with only the very heaviest of solids left behind after settling without any refrigeration for a short, 12 hour period. From this point on, the wine was fermented by wild yeasts, without any temperature control and underwent a full secondary fermentation. It was held on full yeast lees without any stirring through the winter and was sulphured in the Spring.

The final blend was brought together in January 2025 and bottled on February 20th without any fining or filtration.

Renzaglia

In 1982, defying the odds, Guy and Betty Renzaglia planted Illinois' first vines in Alto Pass.

Their son Mark joined the fight, later establishing Bella Luna vineyard in Australia's untouched O'Connell Valley with his wife Sandy. Today, their son Sam carries the torch, expanding Bella Luna while prioritizing a healthy ecosystem.

Through composting, cover crops, and respecting native fauna, they craft exceptional wines while fostering a thriving environment for generations to come.
