Description

This wine really made us look twice when we first tasted it with winemaker Anna Pooley, and it seems we weren't the only ones. It picked up Trophies for Best Syrah, Best Red Wine and Best Wine of Show at the recent 2026 Sydney Royal Wine Show. From Tasmania of all places. A huge result for Pooley and a sign of where Tasmanian Syrah is heading.

Pooley's Coal River Valley home is about as cool a climate as you'll find for Syrah in Australia, and the variety responds with a style that feels more northern Rhone than anything from the mainland. The winemaking approach is measured: extended skin contact for structure and depth, older oak for texture and complexity, with a stainless steel component to retain freshness.

The resulting wine is both plush and precise. Dark fruit, violet florals and white pepper on the nose, with a savoury, mineral quality running underneath. Fine tannins, great natural acid and a long and structured finish.

A beautiful cool climate Syrah from this phenomenal producer, and distinctly its own thing.

95 points
"A wonderfully perfumed Tasmania syrah with red and dark plum, raspberry, dark cherry and blueberry fruits with underlying hints of exotic spice"
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Trophies for Best Shiraz, Best Red Wine & Best Wine of Show - Sydney Royal Wine Show 2026

Trophy for Best Shiraz Dry Red Table Wine - Royal Hobart Wine Show 2025

Top Gold Medal - National Wine Show 2026

95 points - "Inky purple in the glass, with intense, appealing aromas of violet florals and white pepper over black cherry and blackberry compote and a hint of vanilla. The palate is plush with savoury edges: a silky and velvety seam of fruit supported by grainy tannins and a grippy graphite finish. Delicious." - Melissa Moore (The Real Review)

94 points - "A wonderfully perfumed Tasmania syrah with red and dark plum, raspberry, dark cherry and blueberry fruits with underlying hints of exotic spice, peppercorn, dried orange rind, pan juices, charcuterie, apple blossom and a light earthen note in the distance. Pure and juicy on the palate with detailed, plummy fruits daubed with spice and pepper. A savoury-leaning finish with powdered-sand tannins and a saline end point." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This is a beautifully perfumed wine. Indeed it has you at hello. Red berried fruit flavours, twig and spice notes, semblances of smoked meat and a long, sinewy-but-juicy finish; everything here is moreish and quality at once. When Tasmania gets shiraz/syrah right, it tends to get it really right; this release from Pooley in the Coal River Valley is yet more proof." - Campbell Mattinson

94 points - "Savory aromas of red plums, blueberries, black pepper, violets, smoked meats and graphite. The medium-bodied palate shows bright acidity and firm yet fine tannins, giving notes of mulberries, olives, dried herbs and crushed stones. Long and mineral with a spicy, earthy finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com

Syrah is a structured and expressive red wine from the Coal River Valley, Tasmania. Our approach to this cool-climate Syrah is to deliver a balanced profile, offering rich dark and red fruit notes layered with a consistent presence of savoury spice and white pepper. The wine is crafted to showcase both plush generosity and firm, velvety tannin structure, supported by a driven acid line. The winemaking typically involves a period of extended skin contact and maturation in French oak, often balanced with a component of stainless steel to ensure freshness and regional fidelity.

Pooley

Pooley is one of the leading family-owned wineries in Tasmania, renowned for their exquisite Single Vineyard examples of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling from the Coal River region, less than an hour north of Hobart.

The family vineyard was planted in 1985 by Margaret and Denis Pooley. Today it is in the hands of the third generation of Pooleys, with award-winning winemaker Anna Pooley heading up the cellar and her brother Matt as viticulturalist. They make a killer team and the family business is going from strength to strength.

Anna's wines are pure, refined and eminently cellar-worthy. A class-act producer setting a cracking pace for all of Tasmania to follow.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
