Description

Sam Coverdale has been steadily building Polperro into one of the Peninsula’s most thoughtful estates. He farms five vineyards across the region, each with its own mix of clones and exposures, using a blend of organic, biodynamic and regenerative practices. The aim’s simple - healthy vines, balanced fruit, and wines that reflect where they’re from.

The 2024 Pinot Noir brings together fruit from all five sites. It’s made gently, with some whole berries left to ferment from the inside out, adding lift and perfume. Time on skins builds structure, while a year in mostly old oak keeps the focus firmly on the fruit.

What you get is a Pinot with plenty going on - bright red fruit layered over darker berries, a subtle savoury thread, and fine tannins that carry through the finish. It’s a wine that’s as comfortable with a good meal as it is in the glass on its own, and one that speaks clearly of both the place and the person behind it.

A great marriage of Pinot clones

There's something about single estate clones and Pinot.

This wine has been consistently good over the last few vintages that I've been drinking it.

Such a well balanced wine, the acid/tannin structure is perfect.

    A favourite.

    Top Notch

Sublime Pinot Noir. One of my favourites. Beautifully balanced & good value too

Tasting
A deeply concentrated, complex nose of red fruits, along with blackberry and blueberry. The compact and powerful palate displays freshly picked, dewy red fruits. There is a refreshing finish and a sense of minerality. This is an elegant yet powerful and lightly savoury wine with structured, fine tannins.

Winemaking
The fruit is handpicked across multiple vineyards and blocks, then destemmed into 2-ton open fermenters as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally. It is not touched until a 2–3° drop in baumé, allowing fermentation to occur inside the grape berry to increase the aromatics of the finished wine.

Once fermentation starts strongly, the ferment is hand-plunged 2–3 times per day for 15 days. The wine is left on skins for post-ferment maturation for another 15 days before being pressed off skins and racked to barrel.

10% new oak is used across d’Aquitaine and Sirugue extra tight grain, light toast barrels. In spring, the wine is racked and returned to barrel. After a total of 12 months’ barrel maturation, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

Vineyard
A blend of five estate vineyards. This mix of vineyard sites and clonal makeup results in multiple layers of complexity that come together in a harmonious and complementary way.
