Description

Oria-Riff is one of those new-wave projects that makes you sit up and pay attention. Winemaker Cooper David-Draper is still early in his journey, but there’s already a real buzz around what he’s doing – thoughtful, hands-on wines that let great sites do the talking. For this release he’s working with fruit from Fiona Wood’s old Grenache vines, planted in the 60s on deep sandy soils right on the edge of Blewitt Springs.

The fruit was picked twice to capture both brightness and ripeness, then fermented naturally with lots of whole bunches and given plenty of time on skins. It’s a simple but smart approach, and the wine that’s come out the other side is beautifully perfumed, savoury and layered. You get that lifted florals-meets-earthy spice thing Grenache does so well, all carried by long, chalky tannins.

This isn’t a big, showy wine – it’s coiled, energetic, and made with patience and care. A cracking small batch release for Oria-Riff and a clear sign that Cooper is one to watch.

"Tannin quality is off charts here. Succulent, fine and lacy, like licking a spider web."

94 points - "From the famed farmer of grapes Fiona Wood, off Blewitt Springs soil (almost in the sub-region), in a single location, planted 1960s. Two picks bring a bit of salt and pepper to the wine, it sees quite a bit of whole bunches retained in the natural ferment. Tannin quality is off charts here. Succulent, fine and lacy, like licking a spider web. It’s huge in perfume, red cherry, sour and pickled, a fog of rose petal, dried and fresh, some garam masala spice, a sniff of char and tree bark. It’s frisky to taste, fresh in its fruit, spicy in its spice, earthy and savoury elements lock in. A riff of that pleasingly bitter, amaro-like tree bark character chimes in through the finish. It defies it’s heady numbers, positing a fresh and near crunchy red of vitality and brightness, yet laden with burr and puff of savouriness. A lot on, a lot to like." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The 2024 Oria~Riff Dry White and Dry Red consists of old vine Sémillon and Grenache, both planted in the 1960’s and coming from deep sandy soils on the cusp of Blewitt Springs, with Fiona Wood being the custodian of this block. Fi has a certain understanding and attention to the land that seems rare in modern day farming. Not only does she seem to read and understand the vines, but the level of care and detail in her work is unmatched. I’ve been lucky to be able to work for her in the vines and the knowledge I’ve gained through that is priceless.. The Grenache was just as simply made. Picked twice to have different components of ripeness, a high level of whole cluster and extended time on skins seems to really accentuate the savoury and high tone florals that this vineyard exhibits, along with long chalky tannins. This is a surprisingly coiled wine from these deep sands, that will love both time in a bottle and a decanter to unfurl. - Cooper, Winemaker.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
