Description

Sourced from the Strathmore Vineyard in Sutherlands Creek, this is Mulline’s warmer, more structured Pinot built from MV6 and Abel clones grown on granite-laced loams. It’s a site that lends the wine depth and drive, but there’s no shortage of finesse here either.

Ben Mullen plays the whole bunch card with restraint, just 20% in the final blend, allowing the fruit’s earthy spice and deep florals to shine. The wine is dark-fruited and grounded, with notes of black cherry, clove, and crushed herbs. The palate is savoury, detailed and quietly powerful, with tannins that are firm but well woven.

Oak is perfectly in check (30% new), giving just enough lift to frame the wine’s complexity without taking centre stage. It’s a confident, composed Pinot that balances structure and freshness with real class.

Another smart single-site release from Mulline: pure, poised, and expertly put together by one of Victoria's brightest rising talents.

96 points
"Elegant and restrained with aromas of red cherry, rose petals and spices such as Sichuan pepper and star anise together with a little new-oak pencil-shaving scents. The palate is similarly elegant and fine boned and I like the way this keeps building as it sits in the glass. The tannins are superfine and persistent. The most reticent, perhaps, of the five single-vineyard wines but a wine that will no doubt age superbly."

    Towards Burgundy

There is something special about the pinot noirs from this area and the Mulline captures the elements that make this a beautiful wine.Certainly the wine goes beyond a standard Australian pinot noir. The terroir creates that difference so we are heading towards burgundy.

A medium weight with delightful finish this wine is so enjoyable and drinkable.

    A special pinot

This is a very special pinot. Amazing long finish with soft vanillas and extraordinary mouth feel . Loved it.

From the Strathmore Vineyard in Sutherlands Creek—warmer and drier Moorabool Valley site, planted in 1998 and 2015 to MV6 and Abel clones, on grey and brown loams with fragmented granite.
Handpicked fruit was fermented with varying levels of whole bunch across different ferments. Open fermentations with wild yeasts, two pump-overs per day, 9 to 12 days on skins. Pressed to oak for natural malolactic fermentation. Final blend includes 20% whole bunch. 30% matured in new French oak; the rest in seasoned puncheons and barriques. Bottled unfined and with minimal filtration.

Mulline Wines

Established in 2018 Mulline Vintners is a double dose of Bens, specifically winemaker Ben Mullen and business brain and wine drinker Ben Hine. Mullen has experience from around the globe, and was most recently winemaker at Clyde Park.

They source fruit from around the Geelong area of Victoria with a focus on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, working with growers farming sustainably and organically. All steps of the winemaking operation are done with a major focus on looking after the environment.

Their first releases from the 2019 vintage were met with some acclaim - they are definitely young guns to watch out for.

To prevent embarrassment and to encourage rapping couplets... Mulline rhymes with “divine”.
