Description

Modewarre is Mulline’s coolest site, and it shows. The Brown Magpie Vineyard sits just 20 clicks inland from the surf coast, on a mix of sandy loam, estuary marl and limestone, ideal soils for Pinot with elegance and energy.

Ben Mullen handled each clone separately (MV6, 777, 114, 115), playing with whole bunches across the ferments before landing on an assertive 80% inclusion in the final blend. It's a wine that’s fragrant, textural and utterly captivating.

There’s lift and spice from the stems, but it’s the interplay of red berries, briny minerals and fine-grained tannin that carries this wine. Oak use is dialled in (25% new), adding subtle polish to an otherwise expressive, finely etched Pinot Noir.

This is the most savoury and coastal of the Mulline reds, with loads of detail and drinkability.

97 points
"A bright, deep crimson. Ultra perfumed and lifted with its bouquet of brambly red fruits, rose bush and warm spices. Medium bodied, this is both sumptuous and beautifully delineated on the very long, classically structured palate. Absolutely tops from beginning to end and a wine destined to age effortlessly over the next decade or longer."

97 points - "A single-vineyard wine from the Surf Coast, the vineyard planted in '01; 80% whole bunches and matured in 30% new barriques. A bright, deep crimson. Ultra perfumed and lifted with its bouquet of brambly red fruits, rose bush and warm spices. Medium bodied, this is both sumptuous and beautifully delineated on the very long, classically structured palate. Absolutely tops from beginning to end and a wine destined to age effortlessly over the next decade or longer." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "This is an interesting wine, and a very good one. It’s earthen and brambly with red cherry and smoky, stalky characters littered throughout. It’s ripe, and has good mouthfeel, and is finely stitched with tannin, and has more than its fair share of umami-like characters; it’s an earth-pinot. What’s most impressive about this wine is its extension through the finish; it just keeps on pushing. It’s yet more evidence of the excellence of Mulline." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    Excellent winemaking from Geelong

Tried the '24 single vineyard pinots from the Masterclass Pack-- all excellent-- but went back for more of the Modewarre-- great palate & a delight to drink -- good value for a quality pinot.

From the Brown Magpie Vineyard in Modewarre, Mulline’s coolest and most coastal site, 20km inland from Torquay. Planted in 2002 to MV6, 777, 114 and 115 clones on sandy loam over clay, estuary marl and limestone.
Each clone handpicked and fermented separately with 0% to 100% whole bunch. Wild yeast fermentation in open vats with twice-daily punch downs and 9 to 14 days on skins. Pressed to oak for natural malolactic fermentation. Final blend includes 80% whole bunch. 25% matured in new French oak; balance in seasoned barriques and puncheons. Bottled unfined with minimal filtration in December 2024.

Mulline Wines

Established in 2018 Mulline Vintners is a double dose of Bens, specifically winemaker Ben Mullen and business brain and wine drinker Ben Hine. Mullen has experience from around the globe, and was most recently winemaker at Clyde Park.

They source fruit from around the Geelong area of Victoria with a focus on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, working with growers farming sustainably and organically. All steps of the winemaking operation are done with a major focus on looking after the environment.

Their first releases from the 2019 vintage were met with some acclaim - they are definitely young guns to watch out for.

To prevent embarrassment and to encourage rapping couplets... Mulline rhymes with “divine”.
