Description

The MMAD Chenin has quietly settled into its stride over the past few vintages, and this 2024 feels properly at home. It's from a patch of Blewitt Springs vines planted back in ’39 – old, deep-rooted things grown in sand that just seem to deliver every time.

Winemaking’s kept simple – wild ferment, old oak, nothing flashy – which lets the fruit do its thing. It’s not trying to be Loire, not trying to be anything really, just a proper Australian Chenin with shape, crunch and a bit of grip that builds as you go.

It’s got that easy flow on the palate, but it doesn’t fade off either – it keeps moving, keeps drawing you back. Not a loud wine, not trying to be fancy, but there’s heaps going on. Great option if you want something textural and dry that’s a little off the beaten path.

It is rare to see such complexity in youth. Aromatically dense, it builds an impressive, beautifully revealing whole, even within the shortest time in glass. Fashioned upon a central core of red apple, spices and ripe stone fruits, pear and a touch of marzipan, it is immediately engaging in both texture and a fresh liveliness. Delicious now, it can only build further upon the complexity shown. Already, there are emerging honey notes to be enjoyed together with spice, marzipan and ginger adding an additional layer to the base notes of citrus, apple and pear. An extraordinary wine, which heralds a renaissance for the grape in Australia.

This wine is made in the pursuit of both texture and flavour and the outcome is exactly that, texture and fruit weight, set within a context of both freshness and taut control. It’s pretty damn impressive. Pepper, metal, brine, cooked apple, preserved citrus and nut-like characters all make positive contributions here, as do whispers of Vietnamese mint. This wine is excellent now, and will build with extra time in the bottle.

The fourth release of this old-vine chenin, and it’s another exceptional one. Half crushed and half whole-bunch pressed fruit, with fermentation in concrete and large oak, then maturation in old puncheons. An orchard stroll, crossing the seasons, with fragrant blossoms as well as crisply ripe fruit. Fresh, waxy red apples and green pear, yellow and lemon-skinned citrus, along with poached apple, cumquat, hazelnut and preserved lemon characters. A thread of mineral tension is the insistent plot line, with winemaking aptly subservient. Chenin blanc has never lacked for potential in the Vale, but the standout examples have hardly been legion. Here’s one.

Very good, but not Chenin as I know it

    This was tense.

Super concentration of green apple, talc, bath salts and a long finish. Reminded me of recent bottle Domain Fevre Petis Chablis 2021. I was looking for the baked apple, custardy tones that’s typical with Chenin but it wasn’t there. Initially this made for a challenging drink until I just stop trying to find Chenin and just enjoyed it for what it was. This will age wonderfully. Hold for 5 yrs before opening. It is tense, but unlike Chenin as I know it.

MMAD

As if Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW of Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle weren't busy enough already. Their newest venture has seen them team up with their chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz and wine industry professional David LeMire MW to create MMAD Vineyard, based in McLaren Vale.

MMAD Vineyard represents a union of expertise and passion in the wine industry. This partnership, rooted in the success of Shaw + Smith winery in the Adelaide Hills, expands to include other projects like Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania.

Located in Blewitt Springs, the vineyard boasts fine Maslin sands and elevated terrain, granting its wines a distinctive aromatic character. Beneath the sand lies a layer of precious ironstone, contributing structure and complexity to the wines. The vineyard's old Grenache, Shiraz, and Chenin Blanc vines, some dating back to 1939, are a testament to its rich viticultural history.

MMAD is one of the 'must-watch' projects in McLaren Vale. With the combination of an exceptional site and the depth of talent behind it, it's sure to produce some of the region's most exciting wines over the coming years.
