Description

This started as a fun side hustle between two mates - Angus Vinden and Will Gilbert - blending Shiraz and Pinot in a nod to the great Maurice O’Shea reds of old. But four vintages in, it’s clear this isn’t just a passion project anymore.

The 2023 release of the Lignee collab marks a turning point. It’s more structured, more resolved, and miles more serious than the early magnum-only bottlings. Still, the bones of the idea remain: half Hunter Shiraz from Angus’s dry-grown Somerset vines (planted ’65 - ’70), and half high-altitude Orange Pinot from Will’s Gordon Hills site. A blend that's greater than the sum of its parts is the idea.

They make their halves separately - no blending trials, then meet at the end and see how it fits together and in 2023 they both nailed the assignment.

The 2023 release is a lovely savoury, mid-weight red with detail and intent. Nothing showy. Just a wine that feels comfortable in its skin which is both a nod to the past of NSW wine and also a bright new look at what NSW reds can look like in the modern era.

Made from 50% Somerset vineyard shiraz by Angus Vinden and 50% Borrodell vineyard pinot noir by Will Gilbert. A fragrant, contemporary style crafted from superb fruit by astute winemakers who understand balance, architecture, flow and form. Medium in weight, with silken flavours that glide effortlessly across the palate: pure black cherry, crushed blackberry leaf, satsuma plum and tuberose, with a kiss of vanilla and sweet incense. The palate is pure and expansive, singing with remarkable integrity and clarity. Impossibly glorious, long and persistent. Only 1333 precious bottles made.

It’s beautiful, actually. Fine boned, lacy, succulent and super fresh. Dark fruited, cherries and plums, but light and lithe too, fine, silky tannins lend shape and some tightness to texture, the length excellent and a general sense of finesse overall. Neat layers of woody spice, faint alpine herbs, a touch of blood orange and juniper berries, some pepper and a thread of clove and cinnamon woodiness. To stutter, beautiful. A really fine wine.

Vinden Estate

Angus Vinden, the dynamic young winemaker of Vinden Wines, is redefining this beloved Hunter Valley winery. Taking over from his father a few years ago, Angus has infused fresh energy into the family label, producing exciting, modern wines that are garnering attention from the country's leading wine scribes.

He focuses on the Hunter Valley's classic Semillon and Shiraz, excelling with Tempranillo and even Chenin Blanc while exploring these varieties with a creativity and flair rarely seen in the region. Angus expanded the estate with the purchase of the historic Somerset Vineyard, a vineyard with a storied past, having provided the fruit for some of the region’s most acclaimed wines over the last 50+ years. It is a very good thing for the region that this iconic site is now in Gus' hands.

Vinden Wines is a vibrant blend of tradition and innovation, making it hands down one of the Hunter Valley's most exciting up-and-coming labels.
