Description

Luke Lambert doesn’t make flashy Chardonnay; he makes it to speak of where it’s from. This one comes from a high, east-facing pocket of the Denton Vineyard, where granitic soils are so thin you can see the rock grinning through.

Clone 95 vines here produce small, early-ripening bunches, and Luke treats them with his trademark light touch - whole-bunch press, wild ferment, zero additions apart from a whisper of sulphur, then time in a seasoned 2,000-litre foudre.

In 2024, that site delivered Chardonnay with a little more flesh on the bones - sunny fruit layered over its usual mineral spine. White blossom, hay, citrus oil and a cool stony core are all in play, joined by a savoury umami edge that lingers on the finish. There’s density, but it’s the kind of density an athlete has - all sinew, no fat.

It’s another wine of precision and deliciousness and yet another reason Luke Lambert remains one of the most admired voices in the new era of Australian Chardonnay.

    So well made

Delicious Chardonnay. Cork seal increases production cost significantly and yet the price is less than $40. The winemaker respects the wine as much as I do.

    Pure, mineral, cool climate Chardonnay

Medium bodied, shy to start but opens up beautifully, showing a mix of white stone fruits, citrus peel and mineral notes. Lovely chalky mouthfeel and bright acidity brings a nice tension, so moreish!

    Lambert Chardonnay

New favourite Chardonnay, together with Sorrenberg clearly the best Chardonnay available. Wish i could get more!

Lambert’s electric Chardonnay is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s drawn from the usual plot of clone 95 Chardonnay at the top of the east-facing slope in Denton Vineyard. Here, the granitic soils are elevated and are considerably thinner than further down the slope where the Crudo vines sit. Clone 95 is an early-ripening clone with small canopies and berries, so Luke pays particular attention to managing sun exposure and picking dates for these vines.

The winemaking is classic Lambert, with no additions save for small doses of sulphur. The fruit is pressed as whole bunches, fermented naturally and matured in a seasoned 2000-litre foudre. The choice of clone, the higher point on the slope, and the extra sunshine hours produce more power and depth in the Lambert Chardonnay compared to Crudo.

This kind of wine impossible not to love. The 2024 has added a sheen of fleshy radiance to the wine’s classic mineral stoniness, white blossom, cut hay and citrus oil. Like the Syrah from the same year, the Chardonnay has moved up a weight division yet remains as ripped and athletic as ever. Some will prefer the leaner, mineral-charged style of Luke’s 2023, many will prefer the denser, mouthwatering 2024. Either way, it’s a striking Chardonnay through and through. Tension, deeply-cast flavour and poised precision: this wine has the lot. It finishes with appealing umami notes and a reverb of citrus peel.

Lambert Wines

Luke Lambert is one of Australia’s most instinctive winemakers, known for pure, site-driven Chardonnay, Syrah and Nebbiolo from granite-rich Yarra Valley vineyards. His philosophy is simple: let the vineyard lead, keep the winemaking minimal, and preserve the connection between glass and place.

A long-time admirer of Piedmont’s greats, Lambert has made Nebbiolo his calling card, crafting Australia’s benchmark example from Denton Vineyard since 2008. In 2017, he and partner Rosalind Hall planted Sparkletown, a steep, rocky amphitheatre dedicated entirely to Nebbiolo, with the first release still years away.

Everything is done with restraint — hand-picking, wild fermentation, long macerations, large old oak, no fining or filtration. “I’m just trying to make something beautiful,” Lambert says. The result is wines of clarity, perfume and quiet power that have made him one of the most respected names in Australian wine.
