Description

When Kumeu River took over Ray’s Road in Hawke’s Bay in 2017, the team knew the limestone hillside had serious potential. Year by year, the wines have proven them right - and in 2024, with yields down to half the norm, that promise is hitting another level.

Perched at 180 metres with a northerly aspect and dry-farmed vines, Ray’s Road turns out Chardonnays that are more "Chablis-esque" (to use a clumsy term) than Kumeu: zesty, flinty, and mineral-driven. But this vintage brings something extra - a little more weight and peachy generosity without losing that spine of limestone freshness. The palate has a newfound density and length, hinting that this is a wine worth tucking away for a few years, even if it’s already dangerously drinkable.

Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and wild fermented in seasoned French oak, it’s an understated, finely etched expression from one of New Zealand’s most exciting emerging Chardonnay sites and perhaps its most complete Ray’s Road yet.

"The 2024 Rays Road Chardonnay leads with a spicy, almost exotic nose, while the palate strides in smooth, sleek movements. This is creamy and a little nutty, and there are wet limestone notes in the mouth, alongside yellow citrus and layers of dried herbs, cracked fennel seeds, ginger root and fruit flavors. A lovely wine, it's weighted on the back palate and long through the finish. I tasted this as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling. The Ray's Road vineyard is on a limestone base and has been significantly worked and replanted since the Kumeu River purchase in 2021."

Rays Road is Kumeu River’s new vineyard site in Hawkes Bay. This limestone hillside is at 180 m altitude, with a northerly aspect. It is dry-farmed to yield high quality grapes for wine under the Rays Road name for our Kumeu River label. This Chardonnay was hand-harvested, whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeast in older French Oak barrels to give a wine that is zesty and fragrant, with mineral complexity that is very true to its site.

The 2024 vintage in Hawkes Bay was excellent even though yields were down to 50% of usual. We have seen dramatic improvement from this vineyard each year since we bought it in 2017. The ripeness and richness from 2024 has given us a Rays Road Chardonnay with more depth and texture than we have seen over the last few years . This is another step up again from the 2023 Rays Road Chardonnay. The aromas are peachier this year although the distinctive flint, and zesty limestone characters are still there. The palate is showing more density and concentration than previous vintages and this is setting up to be a very fine Chardonnay vineyard. For the first time with Rays Road this feels like it needs bottle age. We are looking forward to following its development while consuming many bottles in the process!

Kumeu River

Like so many new world wineries, Kumeu River, is an immigrant success story, hard work, and growth from generation to generation.

The Brajkovich family’s story has grown in parallel to the growth of the New Zealand wine industry in general, established the Kumeu region north of Auckland.

3rd generation winemaker Michael Brajkovich ( New Zealand’s first MW) spent a vintage in Burgundy in the early 1980’ that changed the wineries trajectory and led them to place a singular focus on producing world class Chardonnay.

This change saw them rename the winery Kumeu River (from San Marino Vineyards) and evolve to a more Burgundian style of winemaking. Since these changes, the wines of Kumeu river have been recognised as belonging to the pantheon of Chardonnay on a global scale.
