Description

Maté’s Vineyard is the crown jewel at Kumeu River. Planted in 1990 by Maté Brajkovich on the very same block where his family first put vines in the ground back in 1944, it’s a site that’s earned a reputation for going toe-to-toe with Burgundy’s best and often coming out on top.

The Mendoza clone vines here naturally give tiny, hen-and-chicken berries - all intensity and flavour. In 2024, it was the last vineyard picked, under perfect late-season skies, the fruit pristine and low-yielding. As always, the team kept it simple: hand-pick, whole-bunch press, wild ferment in French oak, full malo, then 11 months resting in barrel.

Right now it’s taut and composed showing lemon zest, white flowers, a touch of stone with the signature depth and drive that has made this wine so revered. You can drink it now for the sheer precision, but the magic really happens after a decade in the cellar, when all that power finally unfurls.

"The 2024 Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay is mouthfilling and full, easily the biggest and most powerful of the single-vineyard Chardonnays in this 2024 release. "In terms of quality, 2024 is up there with the best of them: 2022, 2020, 2014..." This feels perhaps as statuesque and thrilling as the best of the Maté's so far, with intensity that explodes in every direction on the palate—length and width—with spicy top notes and a thunderous base of yellow fruit. The acidity, as usual, coils and weaves its way across the palate, lacing together the fruit and phenolics with seamless intensity. This is very good."

In 1990, Maté Brajkovich reworked the land and planted a new vineyard of Chardonnay vines on the site of the original vineyard that he and his family purchased in March 1944. The first grapes from this vineyard were harvested in March 1993, the year following Maté's death. The resulting wine was released in November 1994 to coincide with celebrations marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Brajkovich Family's arrival at Kumeu River.

The 2024 vintage for Mate’s Vineyard continues the exceptional level of quality from this 35-year-old vineyard. Mate’s Vineyard was the last vineyard we harvested in the 2024 vintage in perfect weather with the low yielding fruit in pristine condition. The resulting wine shows the density, concertation and length that we expect from a terrific Mate’s Vineyard vintage and this year we see an extra crisp lemon acidity. Although still somewhat shy on the nose, with bottle age the full palette of complex aromas and bouquet of this wonderful wine will be gradually and seductively revealed.

Kumeu River

Like so many new world wineries, Kumeu River, is an immigrant success story, hard work, and growth from generation to generation.

The Brajkovich family’s story has grown in parallel to the growth of the New Zealand wine industry in general, established the Kumeu region north of Auckland.

3rd generation winemaker Michael Brajkovich ( New Zealand’s first MW) spent a vintage in Burgundy in the early 1980’ that changed the wineries trajectory and led them to place a singular focus on producing world class Chardonnay.

This change saw them rename the winery Kumeu River (from San Marino Vineyards) and evolve to a more Burgundian style of winemaking. Since these changes, the wines of Kumeu river have been recognised as belonging to the pantheon of Chardonnay on a global scale.
