Description

Perched on the slope above Maté’s, Hunting Hill has always been a bit of a charmer. First planted in 1982, it quietly added its ripe, citrusy fruit to the Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay before being replanted in 2000 - a move that’s only sharpened its precision and dialled up its distinctive, mealy minerality.

In 2024, yields were low but the fruit that did come off the hill was flawless. The wine’s still a little shy aromatically, but you can already catch that signature lemon-lime blossom and a faint, flinty edge. On the palate it’s all concentration and drive, with the sort of effortless length that makes Hunting Hill so sought-after.

As ever, the recipe is simple: hand-pick, whole-bunch press, wild ferment in French oak, full malo, and 11 months on lees. You can pull a cork now for the thrill of its tension and purity, but if you have the patience, seven or eight years in the cellar will reward you with something special.

93-95 points
"The 2024 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is the ripest in alcohol of the 2024 releases, and it feels powerfully layered and driven on the palate. This is rich, almost thunderous in its positioning, with salted citrus and exotic spices (star anise/fennel/scraped vanilla pod). The oak here is polished and elegant, smoothing down any stray, loose hairs. The barrels have been air-dried for three years and lightly toasted. The finish is tight and focused. This was tasted as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling."

Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality.

The 2024 vintage is a fantastic one for Hunting Hill. Even though the yields were low, the fruit was pristine and beautifully ripe. The aroma of 2024 Hunting Hill is quite reticent in its youth, but you can get glimpses of the typical lemon/lime blossom fragrance and a touch of flintiness. The palate is concentrated and long showing the density of the low yield. This is a fabulous Hunting Hill that will show its best with 7-8 years of bottle age.

Kumeu River

Like so many new world wineries, Kumeu River, is an immigrant success story, hard work, and growth from generation to generation.

The Brajkovich family’s story has grown in parallel to the growth of the New Zealand wine industry in general, established the Kumeu region north of Auckland.

3rd generation winemaker Michael Brajkovich ( New Zealand’s first MW) spent a vintage in Burgundy in the early 1980’ that changed the wineries trajectory and led them to place a singular focus on producing world class Chardonnay.

This change saw them rename the winery Kumeu River (from San Marino Vineyards) and evolve to a more Burgundian style of winemaking. Since these changes, the wines of Kumeu river have been recognised as belonging to the pantheon of Chardonnay on a global scale.
