Description

For years, the fruit from Tim and Angela Coddington’s vineyard low-key bolstered the Estate Chardonnay. But in 2006, Kumeu River decided it was too good to hide in a blend - the vineyard’s plush, peachy personality deserved its own stage.

Now over three decades old, these vines hit one of their lowest yields in 2024, and the result is exactly what you’d hope for: more concentration, more texture, and that signature Coddington generosity. Aromas of ripe peach and white flowers lead into a silky, mouth-filling palate that lingers with understated power.

It’s still made the classic Kumeu way - hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented in French oak, full malo, 11 months on lees - but the vineyard’s voice comes through loud and clear: richer and more opulent than its stablemates, yet still poised and balanced. Delicious now, but give it four to six years and it will hit another gear entirely.

"The 2024 Coddington Chardonnay is alive on the palate with preserved lemon rind, tendrils of crushed shells and layers of brine. It is electric, in its way. There are salted and crushed nuts on the middle palate and length, which uncoils through the finish that allows a second and third look at the detail inherent within. This is very exciting and also creamy. It was tasted as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling."

This wine is produced from a vineyard owned by Tim and Angela Coddington, whose grapes have contributed to the blend of Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay since 1998. It is a vineyard that produces very rich and unctuous Chardonnay that we have long believed could make an excellent single vineyard wine. In 2006, we decided to give Coddington single vineyard status to reflect this vineyard’s unique character.

The Coddington vineyard was the lowest yielding of all our Kumeu vineyards in 2024. The extra concentration and texture that low yields bring has enhanced the typically rich and peachy nature of this vineyard. With beautiful aromas of peach and white flowers the Coddington has a silky concentrated palate that lingers for a long time on the finish. Now over 30 years old this vineyard is producing wines that are approachable now but better with bottle age of 4 -6 years.

Kumeu River

Like so many new world wineries, Kumeu River, is an immigrant success story, hard work, and growth from generation to generation.

The Brajkovich family’s story has grown in parallel to the growth of the New Zealand wine industry in general, established the Kumeu region north of Auckland.

3rd generation winemaker Michael Brajkovich ( New Zealand’s first MW) spent a vintage in Burgundy in the early 1980’ that changed the wineries trajectory and led them to place a singular focus on producing world class Chardonnay.

This change saw them rename the winery Kumeu River (from San Marino Vineyards) and evolve to a more Burgundian style of winemaking. Since these changes, the wines of Kumeu river have been recognised as belonging to the pantheon of Chardonnay on a global scale.
