Description

Stephen Pannell doesn’t do ordinary, and his 2024 Koomilya Rosé is proof. Sourced from a single block of Mataro, including some of the oldest vines on the property, this is a dry rosé with rare complexity - built for those who want more depth from their pink wines.

Inspired by the structured rosés of Bandol and the Marche, it was hand-harvested in early March, gently pressed, and fermented spontaneously in old French oak puncheons. The result is layered and expressive, with wild red berries, dried flowers, spice, and a savoury, textural palate that finishes crisp and long. A whisper of tannin adds grip, giving it serious food-pairing potential.

Drink it now for its bright fruit and energy, or hold onto it for a few years to watch it evolve. Either way, this is no ordinary rose - it's a Pannell wine through and through.

"Steve Pannell makes no bones about this being inspired by Bandol Rosé – Domaine Tempier in particular. This comes off some of the property’s original vines, dating back to the late 1800s... It’s a wine of import and ready charm, both expansive and refined, dry, subtly but purposely structured, and just such a delight."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

"It’s the weight of grapey texture that both draws you in and keeps you there. This is a tongue-hugger. It’s a beautiful rosé to sit with because it’s engaging, interesting and – simultaneously – not too taxing."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"The 2024 Koomilya Mataro Rosé offers us a deeply compelling rosé option that is texturally chalky, flavorsome, long and complex... This is excellent and comes warmly recommended."

96 points - "Steve Pannell makes no bones about this being inspired by Bandol Rosé – Domaine Tempier in particular. This comes off some of the property’s original vines, dating back to the late 1800s. Direct press with minimal skin contact, then natural fermentation in tank for two weeks; raised in neutral puncheons for eight weeks on lees. Red fruited, with cranberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, there’s also orange rind, pink grapefruit and mandarin, wisps of white peppery spice and some subdued florals. It’s a wine of import and ready charm, both expansive and refined, dry, subtly but purposely structured, and just such a delight." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "I guess that you’d call this copper-crimson in colour but really, it’s an ultra pale version of those colours. From there though it’s all personality, most especially texturally. It tastes of pomegranate and orange peel, strawberry and earth, sweet spices and red cherries. But it’s the weight of grapey texture that both draws you in and keeps you there. This is a tongue-hugger. It’s a beautiful rosé to sit with because it’s engaging, interesting and – simultaneously – not too taxing." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2024 Koomilya Mataro Rosé offers us a deeply compelling rosé option that is texturally chalky, flavorsome, long and complex, with mulberry and bramble, white pepper and juniper berries, red apples and a creaminess that is ultra attractive. I swore to stop reviewing rosé on account of so many of them lacking complexity and interest due to carbon stripping in the pursuit of “correct” color. I'm so glad I decided to dip my toes back in. This is excellent and comes warmly recommended. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "Very light coral pink colour; fresh spicy, earthy pomegranate nose; mellow, savoury and complex for such a young rosé. Intense but soft palate, dry and clean, refreshing and long-lasting. A model rosé." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

A single block Mataro from some of the oldest vines on the property stretching back to the late 19th century. Inspired by the wines of Bandol and the Marche this is a dry Rosé of rare complexity made in tiny quantities.

Unmistakably Upper Tintara, undeniably Koomilya.

Cranberry, strawberry, Polish cherries in syrup, lavender, lanolin, native flowers in a vase, lillypilly, five spice, rose petals and dusty roads. The pallet is rich with red fruits and florals set in persimmon jelly. Fruit tea, rosehips and mace round out the flavours and clap hands with textures beat.

Crisp, vibrant, thirst slaking and long. A dry racy finish with a slight phenolic grip makes this a rose of rare complexity. A lighter version of our Rose on a mission and still firmly in command

Drink now or hold for a few years to build greater complexity.
