Description

Jim Barry’s Watervale Riesling has been a go-to for Clare Valley fans for 50 years, and the 2024 release delivers everything you want—bright, pure, and seriously good value.

Sourced from a top section of the Florita vineyard, it’s packed with zesty citrus, floral lift, and that signature Clare Valley minerality. Crisp acidity keeps it fresh and lively, with a long, clean finish that makes it just as easy to drink now as it will be in a few years.

If you’re after a classic Clare Riesling that punches well above its price, this one’s hard to beat.

"Expressive aromas of tangerines, white flowers, citrus and chalk. The palate is light-bodied with racy acidity and a nicely weighted mouthfeel, showing lemons, orange blossoms and melon. Lovely balance of freshness and weight.

"This seems to be a very good JB Riesling. Lemongrass, lime leaf, lime, a bit floral and spicy, with a distinct gin and tonic bite and some bathtime fun perfume. It has a powdery texture, a crisp and lively character, blackcurrant and lavender, and pretty bloody good length. Maybe there’s a little bit of ruggedness to it, but gee, it’s frisky and delicious."

93 points - "The 2024 Watervale Riesling is utterly lovely, classic Clare Riesling, with cut lime, green apple, juicy acidity and just a little hint of cheesecloth/lees complexity in the mouth. 2024 was a variable vintage, but those who succeeded did so with aplomb." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

91 points – "A simple, done-well expression of Riesling with vivacious lemon-lime Splice fruit characters married to gingery spice, a touch of grassiness, some just-ripe pineapple and a flinty, mineral tickle. Succulent, refreshing, good drinking." – Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

The tiny village of Watervale (population 246), nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley, is renowned for the quality of its Riesling. Our Watervale Riesling is picked from a special part of the Florita vineyard in Watervale. This famous Riesling vineyard typically achieves full ripeness with high natural acid levels.

Winemaking Notes:
Explosive aromas of jasmine floral and zesty citrus leap from the glass. The palate is spritely and energetic, with generous fruit that frames a firm lime citrus core. Notes of preserved lemon, lime, and hints of white peach flesh flow through the palate, lingering well after the wine is gone.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.
