Description

Year after year, Lodge Hill proves why Clare Valley is one of the world’s best regions for Riesling. Planted by Jim Barry in 1977 on the cool, elevated slopes of the Eastern Ranges, this vineyard sits at 480 metres above sea level, where warm days and chilly nights help develop bright citrus flavours and crisp natural acidity.

The 2024 vintage is all about purity and freshness. Aromas of lime juice, citrus blossom, and white peach lead into a lively palate packed with brown lime, dried lime leaf, and that classic tangy finish. Gentle pressing and a quick move to fermentation keep everything vibrant and precise, making this a Riesling that’s instantly appealing but built to age.

A go-to for lovers of Clare Valley Riesling, Lodge Hill is great value and an easy match for seafood, Thai dishes, or just a warm afternoon with good company.

"Lots of complexity yet all seamless and flowing with great length. It remains balanced and poised right to the fine, lingering finish. Amazing value."

"I reckon Lodge Hill often has something of a lavender perfume, and this does too... A little too spicy and rugged, perhaps, but very good. I think this wine will turn the corner with a few more years under its belt."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Palest of lemon hues, water-white at the rim. Lime curd, pastry and quartz aromas. A delightful palate with sweet lime notes, white flowers and a sense of seaspray minerality. Lots of complexity yet all seamless and flowing with great length. It remains balanced and poised right to the fine, lingering finish. Amazing value." Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

94 points - "I reckon Lodge Hill often has something of a lavender perfume and this does too. Juicy lime and grapefruit, aniseed, lemongrass and plenty of spice, like cardamon in an exotic way. It’s bright and crunchy, a firm almost white peppery feel to texture, with a lime zest and tonic finish of good length. A little too spicy and rugged, perhaps, but very good. I think this wine will turn the corner with a few more years under its belt." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

91 points - "Freshness is a strong calling card of the wine, though the acid profile is a bit skittish and edgy as a comment. Expect tonic water, floral lift in perfume and palate, gingery spice, white pepper, celery salt and a big squeeze of lime. Refreshing, no doubt, but the acid needs to settle in, and should do well with time." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Originally a pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” Situated at 480 meters above sea level and situated on the Eastern Ranges of the Clare Valley, the grapes at our Lodge Hill Vineyard are exposed to concentrated bursts of sunlight and cool nights which encourage slower ripening. This helps deliver beautiful natural acidity and citrus characters that ripen early because of the small crop it produces. Gentle pressing and a rapid move into the fermentation allows the natural fruit flavours to be preserved.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.
