Description

The 2024 Jim Barry Assyrtiko is an exciting and unique Australian expression of a classic Greek variety, brought to life by the Barry family in Clare Valley.

Peter Barry first encountered Assyrtiko on Santorini in 2006, captivated by its crisp acidity and distinctive character. Inspired, he introduced it to Australian soil, planting the country’s first Assyrtiko vines at the family’s Lodge Hill Vineyard in 2012. This site, known for its elevated position and mineral-rich soils, has proven to be an ideal home for the variety, offering a new chapter in Clare Valley’s winemaking story.

In the glass, this wine is bright and vibrant, offering a compelling mix of citrus, green apple, and subtle tropical nuances. Its palate is defined by a racy acidity and steely finish, echoing its Greek heritage while delivering a fresh perspective rooted in Clare Valley’s terroir.

With its precise, mineral-driven style, this Assyrtiko is both a trailblazer and a testament to the Barry family’s commitment to innovation. It’s a must-try for lovers of crisp whites and adventurous wine drinkers alike.

"The wine is complex and impressively layered, with texture and flavor in profusion. This wine comes highly—and perhaps unsurprisingly to drinkers in Australia—recommended as a great dining wine."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "The 2024 Assyrtiko is crunchy and fleshy, with white linen, cheesecloth, brine, green apple, nashi pear, lemon barley and vanilla wafer. The wine is complex and impressively layered, with texture and flavor in profusion. This wine comes highly—and perhaps unsurprisingly to drinkers in Australia—recommended as a great dining wine. One day, as we see more vine age develop in this vineyard, we might see a premium Assyrtiko produced, in line with some of the great, old-vine beauties of Greece. One can hope." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "Crisp, mineral and chalky, showing aromas of citrus, white flowers and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with bright acidity and a mouthwatering finish. Drink now. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com

92 points - "Very pale lemon colour. Citrus and sweet pastry aromatics. Palate leans into apples and lemon, with a crunchy acid line that keeps things light and vibrant. Good length: as it runs there’s a saline minerality which furthers its appeal." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

A wonderful alternative to Sauvignon Blanc

The bright acidity and complex flavours, reminiscent of both Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, make it an ideal wine to serve with seafood.

“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.”

Peter Barry, Second Generation Family Winemaker.

Winemaking Notes
The 2024 Assyrtiko is bright and lively with lifted aromas of guava,
mango, and passionfruit combined with lemon and granny smith apples.
The palate has an elegant acid line, with lemon and passionfruit flavours upfront, progressing to granny smith apples further to the back. Good length with a cool, clean, and steely finish.

With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.
