Description

Jemma and Steve Fielke continue to carve out their own space in the Adelaide Hills, and this single-vineyard Chardonnay shows exactly why people are paying attention. The site sits high in Lenswood, planted to I10V1 vines that are now over 40 years old. With its east-facing aspect, the vineyard avoids the harshest of the afternoon sun, giving fruit that holds freshness even in warmer years like 2024.

The growing season was a shift back to average after three cooler vintages, and the wine reflects that – it’s a little more powerful and layered, while still carrying the line and tension that defines Hills Chardonnay. The approach in the cellar stays hands-off but precise: whole bunch pressed, wild ferment in 25% new oak, natural malo ticking over in spring, then bottled after nine months without fining or filtration.

The result is a Chardonnay that feels both rich and chiselled, savoury and textural but with plenty of fruit energy. It’s small-batch, carefully handled, and for us one of the more exciting new Chardonnay projects in the country.

"So much personality here. It feels kind of special, and you can taste the sweat and tears in the wine too (don’t mind me). Love this. It has viscosity and flavour. In short, it delivers. A wonderful expression of Hills Chardonnay. YES."

It’s wheaty and nutty, a slippery buttery richness to stone fruit with cinnamon, aniseed and ripe lemon, a little almond pastry in the mix too. It’s a potent wine, glossy and rich, kind of saline too, but there’s this umami and citrus peel thing, with pulpy lemon flavour and acidity, biscuits and spice, white mushroom, and a yellow fruited finish of super length and fine carriage. So much personality here. It feels kind of special, and you can taste the sweat and tears in the wine too (don’t mind me). Love this. It has viscosity and flavour. In short, it delivers. A wonderful expression of Hills Chardonnay. YES.

    Surprisingly indulgent

Ntty, saline notes, butterscotch, apple and stone fruit. Heaps of flavour and creamy texture. Perfume matching that butterscotch/caramel note for me. Reasonably long finish also. Quite tasty albeit a bit atypical from other Hills Chardonnay I've tried.

    Really interesting and very good

This is a great re-introduction to Chardonnay from this region. I think it’s reset the benchmark in fact. When you consider the oldies like Yattarna and Petaluma Chardonnay.

The first thing I notice is how classy the oak is - they must have used some tip-top barrels here. Then the fruit has a wonderful silkiness to it with Xmas spices coming through lightly., couple with a light chicken broth thing.

I really like it. It didn’t line up the Raveneau promise which I equate to crystalline and tense Chardonnay. This is more Mersault or Challonaise to my taste. But whatever your reference, it’s very good and great value to boot.

The 2024 Lenswood Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine. This wine was picked on the 27th of March, from a 40 year old I10V1 vineyard, with an East facing aspect protecting it from the afternoon sun. The season was warmer than the previous 3 years, returning to the long term average, leading to a richer, more powerful expression of our Chardonnay. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and settled overnight without additions, before barrelling down with solids to 25% new oak for a wild fermentation. No sulfur was added until malo naturally completed in the late spring. This allowed bottling without the need for fining or filtration after 9 months maturation.

Jemma & Steve Fielke are two names you need to put on your radar.

Born and raised in the Adelaide Hills, the two met while studying Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Adelaide and have since spawned this boutique wine label with big plans on the horizon.

They have planted out parts of Jemma's family property in the Hills to one day make their own estate-grown wines but in the meantime, they are sourcing small parcels from Piccadilly and making some profoundly delicious wines.

The word on the street is these two will be big players in the future of the Hills. Get in now on the ground floor of this exciting emerging project.
