Description

The Leask brothers at Hither & Yon have been quietly championing Mediterranean varieties in McLaren Vale for years, and Vermentino has become one of their real success stories. It suits the Vale’s warm, coastal climate perfectly – holding its freshness even in the hottest years.

The 2024 vintage was steady and dry, giving small, clean bunches with great natural acidity. Fermented cool in stainless steel, the focus was on capturing Vermentino’s clean fruit and salty edge rather than building weight or oak.

The wine is light, crisp and a little savoury, with flavours of lemon, green apple and sea spray. There’s a gentle grip through the finish that keeps it interesting without making it heavy. It’s the kind of wine that disappears fast on a warm afternoon – simple, bright and properly refreshing.

Vibrant and fresh, with aromas of sliced lemons, white flowers, apple blossoms and talcum powder. The palate is light-bodied with focused acidity, a nicely constructed mouthfeel, a fresh finish and underlying concentration. Drink now. Screw cap.

Picked both early in the season and the morning, this was crushed to tank for a cool ferment on skins for two weeks; pressed to old oak to finish alcoholic fermentation and go through mlf; three months' élevage. Cypress and myrtle, wild grasses, tea tree oil, chamomile, Indian tonic, martini olive, lime oil, Vietnamese mint, preserved lemon, coriander seed and grapefruit pith. It’s a briny, maritime wine – like a botanical-infused aperitif – light of weight with a feathery grip and abundant freshness. This is the second release, and the fundamentals are the same, but this steps up in poise and balance. Very good.

Place
Oakley Road Vineyard – total block size 0.22 hectares.
Planted as rootlings in 2020 to a single-wire cordon trellis. The terrain is Talus Slope within the Kurrajong Formation. Soils consist of reddish clay and breccia of siltstone and ironstone, underlain by North Maslin Sand. The vineyard sits below westerly sloping foothills, influenced by gully winds and surrounded by natural creeks and trees.

Vermentino originates from Sardinia and Corsica in western Italy, where it is prized for its clean, aromatic, and saline character. This is our second vintage of Vermentino, with slightly less skin contact this year to achieve a yellow-golden colour and a longer, more refined palate.

Vintage
The 2024 growing season was one of the most dynamic in recent memory. A cool, dry spring was followed by a windy, cold flowering period and an unusually wet start to summer—ten times the average rainfall across December and January. From January 26, however, the season shifted dramatically, bringing 47 consecutive days without rain.

Vintage 2024 spanned 45 days, beginning with Petit Blanc on February 14 and finishing with Carignan on April 5. It was a compressed but full-tilt harvest with excellent finishing conditions for later-ripening varieties.

A brief period of high heat in mid-season impacted yields, creating a defining line between fruit picked before (white, rosé, and light reds) and after the heatwave. Ultimately, the season reflected the full spectrum of nature’s balance — a cool start, a hot, dry middle, and a harmonious finish around Easter’s full moon.

Despite the challenges, the resulting wines show precision, brightness, and complexity. Our greatest reward was working together as a family and team to bring this demanding vintage to life.

Winemaking
Hand-picked on the morning of March 9 at 10.6 Baume, yielding 3.8 tonnes. The fruit was gently destemmed and crushed into small stainless-steel vats, where it underwent natural fermentation with ambient yeasts. The wine remained on skins for 14 days in a cool room at 15°C for gentle extraction.

After draining directly to press, free run and solids were transferred into old French hogsheads to complete both primary and secondary fermentations naturally. The wine spent three months in oak with periodic lees stirring before being bottled on August 12, 2024.
