Description

This is Jono Koerner’s tribute to his dad, Anthony - aka Albert - who planted Vermentino on the family’s Watervale vineyard back in 2009, well before it became the cool white of the moment. The grape’s taken to Clare like a duck to water: tough, drought-hardy, and full of personality when grown on these limestone soils.

The 2024 vintage saw warm, steady ripening through summer, and Jono’s taken that generous fruit and built a wine with real texture and charm. It’s all free-run juice, wild fermented in old oak, with full malolactic and no fining or filtration. Kept on lees for nine months, it’s plush and layered but still lifted by that classic Watervale acidity and a lovely hit of saline minerality.

This is a step up from your usual easy-drinking Vermentino - more savoury, more detailed - but still super approachable. One of the best Australian examples of the variety kicking around right now.

"Sea spray and oyster shell with lime, green melon and pomelo. Briny, zesty and mouth-filling—this salty white is party-starting gear."
- Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Halliday editor Anna Webster and I believe it's the year of the salty white. Vermentino in this country keeps getting better, and this, too, is a welcome addition to the saline scene. Sea spray and oyster shell, this is limey and briny, mouth-filling and nerve-tingling, party-starting gear. Green melon, pomelo and Granny Smith flavours keep the tastebuds tingling. It's a home run." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

Name Story:
Back in 2009 Anthony Koerner was researching Mediterranean grape varieties that could potentially grow well in the Clare Valley climate, he concluded that Vermentino was the one he was going to plant. Vermentino has proven to grow very well in Clare, it is resilient, doesn’t need much water, it crops well, all while producing incredible layers of flavour. Anthony’s nick name is Albert and this is where the name of this wine comes from.

Vintage Season:
Picked on the 22nd of Feb, we saw perfect ripening conditions through December and January with the temperature sitting in the high 20’s and low 30’s resulting in a fleshier style of Vermentino compared to the 2023 vintage. The wine also had lots of Malo, which has built nice complexity and texture.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose you get scents of banana blossom, grapefruit, with savoury notes and subtle white spice, very appealing. This wine offers incredible texture, it’s silky smooth with a plushness but held together with the underlining Watervale acid structure which keeps it lifted. As expected, there is a beautiful salinity, sea spray character to the wine, which is a characteristic of Vermentino. The minerality from the limestone soils is a show case, balanced out with fresh lemon curd, white peach and nashi pear.
