Description

97 points & No. 12 in the James Suckling Top 100 Australian Wines of 2025
"A notably complete single-vineyard bottling, with an excellent balance of tension and power."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling

Perched high in the cool reaches of Gladysdale, Applejack is best known for shaping some of the Yarra’s most poised Pinot. But in recent vintages, its potential for Chardonnay has become undeniable - particularly in warmer years like 2024.

This site sits at 300 metres, with east-facing slopes and basalt-rich soils that deliver fruit with piercing acidity and fine-boned structure. The 2024 growing season was warm and relatively early and the Chardonnay here benefited hugely - ripening with clarity, energy, and precision.

Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in 500L puncheons (only 15% new), it spent nine months on lees to build tension and shape. No stirring, no fining - just a clear expression of site.

The result is a tightly coiled, mineral Chardonnay with citrus pith, white nectarine, and a gentle thread of almond and struck flint. There’s a saline edge and mouth-watering line that makes it incredibly moreish.

Applejack Chardonnay is always limited and getting more so - this 2024 release might be the most finely detailed yet.

No whole bunches and only MV6 from a south-facing slope at 400m, which has worked well in this warm year. A touch closed, this didn't need too long to open up, revealing a complex array of aromas including pure red cherry, sarsaparilla and spices such as clove and cardamom. Tightly wound, this is driven as much by the wine's very bright acidity as its superfine tannins. Give this some air and drink now or watch it slowly unfurl over time.

Reserved, powerful, super complex nose, smoky, spicy, citrus oils and juice, into stonefruit, into an earthen aspect. This is for the cellar and this is super. Aftertaste brings grapefruit and apple skins, texture, mineral, stones. Outstanding Applejack Chardonnay. Intense and pure but with layers of character. Reserved power. One of the most characterful Applejack chardonnays I’ve tasted. No new oak. It’s not exaggerated or in your face but this just has all the extras.

A notably complete single-vineyard bottling, with an excellent balance of tension and power. Aromas of lime leaves, sliced lemons, sea spray, green apples, oyster shells and flint. The palate is tense and nervy, with a strong mineral drive and strength, which will unravel beautifully over time. Floral and mineral in character, this chardonnay will reward time in the bottle. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
