Description

In Barney Flanders’s skilled hands, Pinot Gris transforms into a textural, balanced, and utterly delicious wine. The 2024 Garagiste Merricks Pinot Gris is a shining example of his ability to combine traditional techniques with a playful edge, delivering a wine that’s as distinctive as the Mornington Peninsula itself.

Sourced from 28-year-old vines planted in Merricks’ northeast-facing grey loam and red ferrosol soils, this Gris gets the full treatment. The majority of the fruit is whole-bunch pressed to old puncheons with full solids and aged on lees for added texture, while 10% undergoes carbonic maceration for three weeks, contributing spice, a blush hue, and a zippy red-fruited lift.

The result is a wine that’s both floral and citrus-driven, with aromas of orange blossom, orange zest, and stone fruit leaping from the glass. On the palate, it’s layered and lively, with a chalky, saline edge adding structure to the vibrant fruit flavours. A long, savoury finish makes every sip as intriguing as the first.

Whether you’re a fan of funky whites or just want a Gris with serious personality, the 2024 Garagiste Merricks Pinot Gris is sure to impress.

90 points - "Struck match, pear and apricot, also plenty of parmesan rind. some jasmine perfume hiding out the back. It’s juicy and features pear and stone fruit drizzled with honey, but also has quite a cheese cloth thing happening, which some may love, though I find it a bit too lactic and gluey. Still, it has some freshness to acidity, and a finish of good length. There’s also something of a peanut oil character about it. Good wine, interesting, a slight warmth and glycerol thing on the finish is a minor intrusion. Also tastes like it has a bit of botrytis richness, perhaps." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

In Barney Flanders's hands, Pinot Gris can be a wonderful thing. Time after time, you can expect a mouthwatering pure Gris with texture, structure and balance, and the 2024 is right in the zone. The fruit is sourced from 28-year-old, northeast-facing vines rooted in the signature grey loam and red ferrosols soils of Merricks. The majority of the fruit is pressed as bunches to old puncheons with full solids and kept on lees, while a small portion of the blend (10%) ferments carbonically for three weeks. The whole bunch thing works a treat, capturing stone fruit and floral perfume, whereas the maceration nails the spice, red fruit zip, blush colour and elegant, detailed structure. Expect a pure-fruited, perfumed, spicy and savoury Gris, deftly weighted with waves of flavour, nippy texture and drinkability that’s off the scale.

Garagiste Wines

Garagiste is the project of Barnaby Flanders, one of the most respected names in Mornington Peninsula wine. Since launching in 2006, Flanders has focused on making serious, small-batch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the distinct sub-regions of the Peninsula.

He started out at Merricks Grove in 2000 and still sources from that vineyard today, alongside parcels from places like Tuerong, Balnarring and Main Ridge. Each site brings something different - whether it’s the sandy soils of the north or the higher, cooler slopes in the south - and Flanders leans into those differences rather than smoothing them out.

His approach is minimal but exacting. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts, and sees restrained oak. Pinot Noir is all about balance - picked for freshness, made with a light touch, and bottled without excess. The wines are clean, detailed, and built to age, but they’re also approachable from the outset.

Together with winemaker and business partner Cam Marshall, Flanders also makes the Le Stagiaire range - a more accessible price point that offers legitimately some of the best value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia that still carries the same regional clarity and intent. Across both labels, the focus is sharp: site expression, thoughtful farming, and no shortcuts. Garagiste remains one of the benchmark producers in Mornington. If you want to understand what makes this region special, this is a very good place to start.
