Description

Garagiste’s first Gewürztraminer release in six years - and there’s barely enough to go around.

Sourced from a tiny parcel of 30-year-old vines in Tuerong, yields were so minuscule in 2024 that only a single 500L barrel was made. Half the fruit underwent whole-bunch fermentation to build texture, while the rest was pressed straight to seasoned oak, with the wine maturing on lees for seven months.

The result? A finely-tuned expression of Mornington Peninsula Gewürztraminer, balancing its signature perfume with precision and restraint. Classic rosewater and meadow florals lead into a succulent, gently spiced palate, lifted by a fine thread of acidity and a touch of phenolic grip. This isn’t the heavy, oily Gewürz of old - it’s a bright, layered, and quietly complex take on the variety.

With such limited quantities, this will disappear fast. If you’re lucky enough to grab a bottle, do yourself a favour and pair it with a decadent cheese board!

Wholesaler Notes:

Oof. Due to negligible yields, it’s been six years since the last release of this wine. In good years, Garagiste’s small parcel of 30-year-old vines in Tuerong yields bunch sizes averaging 20-30 grams! In 2024, there was just enough for a single 500-litre barrel. It's a shame more people won’t get to taste such a lovely wine. Half the fruit ferments as whole bunches for three weeks, where Barney looks to build mouthfeel rather than relying on high levels of ripeness on the vine: “The carbonic element ramps up the perfume and the texture.” The remaining half is pressed as bunches for fermentation in seasoned wood, and the whole matured for seven months in a single puncheon on its lees.

This is textbook Gewürz, immediately giving off scents of rose petals and water, meadow florals, some spice and beautifully ripe, pure fruit. The texture is succulent, with flecks of phenolics and a detailed line of livening acidity keeping everything tight and compact. This belongs on a degustation menu (or get this in front of some meltingly ripe Munster). Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Garagiste Wines

Garagiste is the project of Barnaby Flanders, one of the most respected names in Mornington Peninsula wine. Since launching in 2006, Flanders has focused on making serious, small-batch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the distinct sub-regions of the Peninsula.

He started out at Merricks Grove in 2000 and still sources from that vineyard today, alongside parcels from places like Tuerong, Balnarring and Main Ridge. Each site brings something different - whether it’s the sandy soils of the north or the higher, cooler slopes in the south - and Flanders leans into those differences rather than smoothing them out.

His approach is minimal but exacting. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts, and sees restrained oak. Pinot Noir is all about balance - picked for freshness, made with a light touch, and bottled without excess. The wines are clean, detailed, and built to age, but they’re also approachable from the outset.

Together with winemaker and business partner Cam Marshall, Flanders also makes the Le Stagiaire range - a more accessible price point that offers legitimately some of the best value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia that still carries the same regional clarity and intent. Across both labels, the focus is sharp: site expression, thoughtful farming, and no shortcuts. Garagiste remains one of the benchmark producers in Mornington. If you want to understand what makes this region special, this is a very good place to start.
