Description

Elanto is already being tipped as one of Australia’s most important new vineyard projects, and the 2024 Chardonnay makes it easy to see why. Planted in 2019 by Sandro Mosele at ultra-close density (11,111 vines per hectare), the vineyard is farmed with obsessive detail and cropped to just 500g per vine. It’s a level of precision rarely seen in this country, and the results are extraordinary.

The Chardonnay comes from three blocks – Verge, Buckshot and Seawinds – each picked and vinified separately. Whole-bunch pressed to French oak, it went through a natural fermentation, with some barrels also completing malo to bring texture and savoury complexity. After 10 months in barrique, the wine was settled in concrete and stainless steel before bottling.

The wine itself is arresting: citrus blossom, grapefruit pith and struck flint up front, with layers of stone fruit, grilled nuts and a gentle creaminess from time on lees. There’s intensity and weight here, but also a precision and saline edge that ties it all together.

Named Best New Winery in the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion, Elanto has quickly proven it’s a vineyard to watch. This Chardonnay is proof of concept – a wine of depth, detail and pedigree from vines barely out of their youth.

"A terrific follow up to the inaugural release, coming out with more weight and body... Moreish and compelling."

This is seriously good. The intensity of fruit is the thing, and the associated length, though there’s a keen textural element and just plenty of wow factor besides. Yellow peach, citrus, nougat, honeycomb and lemon blossom notes charge thoughout. There’s a lot of fruit, a deal of acidity, and a sizeable serve of oak, but all work together and all feel commanding.

A terrific follow up to the inaugural release, coming out with more weight and body. Mid-straw gold and bright. Floral and waxy with lemon, spiced stone fruit, brown spices and honeycomb – lots within yet definitely in the savoury spectrum. Fuller bodied, rich, almost al dente with its phenolics and layers of texture via creamy, nutty lees. It’s detailed yet supple, with a succulence thanks to the all-important uplifting acidity. Moreish and compelling.

This wine is a blend of the 3 Chardonnay vineyards (lieux-dits); Verge, Buckshot and Seawinds.

Each vineyard was picked and vinified separately. The fruit was hand sorted and then whole bunch pressed with the juice run direct to a mix of new and older French oak barriques. Similar to the previous vintage, a natural fermentation completed over the coming months. More of the barrels underwent malolactic fermentation as Sandro sought the tactile notes of MLF, and the savoury, reductive characters that malo lees can contribute. There is already a whisper of chalk and gunflint, which will undoubtedly intensity with bottle age.

In total the wine spent 10 months in barrel before being transferred to large concrete vats for a further 2 months, followed by further maturation in stainless steel before bottling. Diam 30 closure.
