Description

Blewitt Springs sits on the higher, sandier side of McLaren Vale, where ripening runs a little slower and the wines take on a slightly lighter, blue-fruited face. Duncan and Peter Lloyd know this country inside out - their certified organic vineyard here has been the backbone of the Dune wines from day one.

Blewitt Springs gives Shiraz perfume, lift, and a finer, more savoury edge than the heavier wines from down the hill. 2024 was a low-yielding year, so the fruit came off small and concentrated, with incredible balance right from the pick.

It’s medium-bodied and built on blueberry, dark cherry, plum and mulberry fruit with layers of spice, dried herbs and that gentle earthy warmth that marks this subregion. The tannins are long, fine and chalky, giving the wine shape without heaviness. Fermented naturally and raised in old oak, it’s unforced, detailed and far better than it has any right to be at this price.

This release took home the Trophy for Best Shiraz at the McLaren Vale Wine Show, which tells you what you need to know: this is one of Australia’s best-value reds, full stop.

    Give time in cellar

Good, but tannins need a few more years of cellaring to settle, then it will earn the high points rating given.

Whilst McLaren Vale is not a large region it is geologically diverse. The Blewitt Springs sub-region is known for deep sandy soils on yellow clays. Shiraz typically ripens later here than other parts of McLaren Vale and displays different characteristics. The sandy soils typically produce shiraz of lifted dark fruit, floral and meaty notes, the tannin is fine yet chalky and the wines are often medium bodied rather than full.

Dark yet glossy fruits, sweet herbs, demerara sugar and stained cherry juice. Medium bodied and savoury textured , plush sweet fruited palate , fine and long , nice density of tannin, unfurling layers of flavour, mulberry and cherry juice, dark spice, little smoky and incense, cured meat and a little gravelly texture to finish.

Dune

Duncan and Peter Lloyd are the latest generation of Lloyds (of Coriole fame) to make wine in McLaren Vale.

Growing up immersed in the hotbed of food and wine culture that is McLaren Vale, the boys have now partnered up to start their own wine project with a stunning vineyard in Blewitt Springs as the centrepiece.

The grapes are farmed organically, the wines are made with a gentle touch, but rather than let the 'minimal intervention' philosophy hem them in with dogma, the boys are free to tinker and blend as they see fit.

These are fantastic, energetic wines that have set a cracking pace with only a few vintages under the brand's belt. Keep your eyes peeled for what's next for the brothers Lloyd.
