Description

Peter Graham’s Gamay is a beautifully balanced take on the variety, drawing inspiration from Cru Beaujolais while staying true to its Beechworth roots.

Grown on the estate vineyard, the fruit is fermented in open concrete tanks, with 15% whole bunches adding freshness and structure. It then spends nine months in foudre and barrique, bringing just the right amount of depth without losing its energy. Pete's final product is a bright yet layered Gamay, made for both early drinking and a little time in the cellar.

With granite soils, high elevation, and a cool climate, Beechworth is a natural fit for Gamay, and Peter’s minimal-intervention approach lets the vineyard do the talking. This is thoughtful, detailed winemaking - a wine that feels effortless but has plenty to say.

"Raspberry, black cherry, hazelnut, a bit spicy and autumnal too, mint and dried flowers, but you know what, it most certainly speaks to the grape variety, and also has a cool steel-like inflection, which is very nice. It’s medium-bodied, succulent, red and black fruited, a bit earthy and nutty, balanced acidity, with a fine sooty tannin finish of excellent length offering some almond paste richness. Yum. So good."

"Fermented in open top concrete tank; 15% whole bunches with destemmed berries left uncrushed for gentle extraction; nine months' maturation in foudre and barrique. The maker sees gamay as a natural fit for Beechworth. You have to agree. It combines the fineness of red-berried expression with an extra depth of fruit concentration that is impressive. Mixes a touch of savouriness, an autumnal blend of earthiness and leaves, with black cherries, cassis, dried herbs and a light pepperiness. Smooth as you like across the middle palate, finishing with a bright ping of acidity. Gamay gets serious."

    Very good drinking

This is a serious wine and among the best Gamay I’ve had from Australia. A great debut for this grape from Domenica. It’s not an exaggeration to say this is up there with Cru Beajolais.

Gamay is a medium bodied red wine and a natural fit for Beechworth’s climate, elevation and soil.

Grown on the Estate vineyard and inspired by the best Cru Beaujolais, this is a Gamay to be taken seriously. Fermented in a large open topped concrete tank with 15% whole bunches. Destemmed berries were left uncrushed, allowing for gentle extraction and maintaining purity of fruit. Aged in foudre and barrique for nine months.

Cool earth, mulchy undergrowth, impressions of purple fruit and woody spice. An expressive wine with a structure suiting medium term ageing. A pure and vibrant expression of Australian Gamay

Domenica

Peter Graham is one of Beechworth's most thoughtful and talented winemakers. From his small plot of land on the Beechworth "Golden Mile", Pete crafts articulate and powerful wines with a gentle hand.

He farms his vineyard organically, though uncertified, with great care. The quality of fruit it yields is first class. In the winery, everything is moved via gravity. Patience is a virtue that Pete definitely possesses. No wine is released until it's 'ready'.

The Nebbiolo is one of the country's benchmarks. The Chardonnay is always in high demand given Pete's history as assistant winemaker at Giaconda. The Shiraz is the very model of modern Australian Shiraz; a wine with both power and refinement.

As Mike Bennie once noted:"If you’re into the new wave of truefine wine producers of Australia you should be onto, should get onto, Domenica. Classics in the making. Rising high."
