Description

The Les Vergers comes from John and Josie D’Aloisio’s vineyard, high above Seville in the Upper Yarra. The vines, planted in 1991 on their own roots, are I10V1 clone Chardonnay set in deep red volcanic soils - this is the site that has most contributed to Shaun Crinion’s reputation as one of the most skilled Chardonnay makers in the region.

The fruit is hand-picked and cooled overnight before a gentle whole-bunch foot crush and long press. The juice runs straight to barrel without sulphur, where it begins fermenting naturally in a mix of French oak, 70% old and 30% new. There’s no stirring of lees, no temperature control, it's a little wild but beautifully detailed expression of the Upper Yarra.

Compared with the Appellation Chardonnay, this wine has more power and depth. The extra time on lees and a touch more new oak bring greater texture and a subtle savoury edge. The aromas lean toward yellow stone fruit, custard and toasted brioche with a flicker of flint. The palate is layered but focused with ripe peach and apple pie flavours balanced by tight, fresh, grapefruity acidity.

It’s one of Shaun’s most complete releases to date, and one that will only gain detail with a few years in the cellar. Production is small and demand is always strong for this wine, so don’t wait too long.

"There's a lot to like here from the first whiff. Aromas of nectarine and apple blossom, together with subtle hazelnut and marine scents, lead onto the palate, which is energetic, taut and very well balanced. One of those wines that gets better with each sip."

Sourced from a vineyard in Seville at 232m and planted in '91. A very bright green gold. There's a lot to like here from the first whiff. Aromas of nectarine and apple blossom, together with subtle hazelnut and marine scents, lead onto the palate, which is energetic, taut and very well balanced. One of those wines that gets better with each sip.

    Freshness and complexity

Lots going on, not the match stick domintaed wine I expected. Lovely now, Cellaring not necessary.

Sourced from John and Josie D’Aloisio’s vineyard located high up on the hill above the township of Seville. The I10V1 clone Chardonnay was planted in 1991 on its own roots (non-grafted) and is grown on the stunningly rich red volcanic soils this subregion of the Yarra Valley is famous for.

This vineyard is just getting better and better with age and does a remarkable job of producing amazing wines year in year out.

Winemaking

The fruit is hand-picked and cooled overnight. Whole bunches are lightly crushed by foot before a long pressing when the un-sulphured juice is transferred straight to oak. The oak is a combination of old (70%) and new (30%) French barriques and puncheons. Ferments are allowed to start naturally (wild) and complete with no temperature control. The wine is not battonaged and left on lees for 10 months in oak and a further 5 months on lees in stainless steel. Some MLF may have occurred but not encouraged and SO2 is added when the wine is ready for it. The wine is lightly filtered before being bottled un-fined by hand via gravity.

Tasting Notes

A richer aromatic profile than the 23’, yellow stone fruit aromas dominate with custard brioche and spice, along with some hints of butted toast and flint. The palate is singing - rich and fresh all at once – and the texture and fruit concentration (peach, apple pie) make it super round in the mouth. There is also the tell-tale grapefruit acidity that freshens and drives the palate to a clean and flavoursome finish. Don’t miss this!

Dappled Wines

Dappled owner/winemaker Shaun Crinion has a mountain of winemaking experience from around the globe, culminating with the establishment of a label all of his own.

Shaun's focus is on expressing the sub-regionality of the Yarra Valley through simply gorgeous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and a growing range of experimental wines.

With the combination of Shaun's A-grade fruit from the Yarra's top growers and his precise, astute winemaking, the value on offer in the Dappled range is second to none.

He was James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2018. The wines have only stepped in quality since then though the modest pricing remains the same. Unsurprisingly, his wines sell out in short order each year. He's now regarded as one of the best small-scale producers in the modern Yarra Valley.
