Description

“Fin de la Terre” means End of the Earth - Shaun Crinion’s nod to the long, winding drive out to the Steels Creek vineyard at the base of the Kinglake Range. It’s a remote site with hungry mudstone and shale soils over granite, scattered with quartz, and vines planted back in 1990 that now sit comfortably in their 30s.

The 2024 Syrah was hand-picked, cooled overnight and fermented as 100% whole bunches. The fruit sat untouched for two weeks to start a natural carbonic ferment, then was gently foot-stomped once a week for another five before being pressed straight to old French oak. It stayed there on full lees until the following May, then was bottled by hand without fining or filtration.

All that patience and minimal handling have paid off. The wine is vivid and fragrant, with aromas of blackberry, plum, clove and bay leaf, and a subtle thread of black olive and spice. The palate has depth but also lift - dark fruit wrapped around fine, herbal structure. It feels effortless but clearly comes from serious work and attention.

Production was tiny, and the wine’s already being talked about as one of the standout Syrahs from the Yarra this year.

Not in love

Really interesting Syrah, not classic at all, at first I really enjoyed it but when we opened another bottle I had a totally different experience and didn’t enjoy it at all. Not a particularly helpful review I’m sorry. Try it for yourself though.

Smooth as!

Straight up the bottle closure got me. I'll be back for more and hopefully they'll last a bit longer but i doubt it. Great wine for the price.

Sourced from the Peirce Family vineyard in Steels Creek at the base of the Kinglake range. It’s a warm site with hungry mudstone and shale soils with a granitic bedrock base and some scattered quartz. The vines are own rooted and planted in 1990 - so now 34 years old!

Winemaking

Hand-picked and sorted, cooled overnight and gently placed into 1 tonne fermenters as 100% whole bunches. The fruit is locked up for two weeks to start a natural carbonique ferment for 2 weeks with no working at all, after which time the fruit is pigéaged (foot stomped) once a week for a further 5 weeks. The must is then pressed straight to a very old puncheon with all lees - and not touched until May the following year. It’s then that the wine gets racked straight to its bottling tank and is bottled by hand via gravity. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

Tiny crops resulted an intensely concentrated wine that is deep ruby/purple in colour. Think blackberries, plum and clove, hints of thyme and bay leaf – with black olive making an appearance. The palate is round and plush with a super core of black fruits with herbal characters giving great length and line. Very limited Syrah available this year, so you’ll need to be quick!

Dappled Wines

Dappled owner/winemaker Shaun Crinion has a mountain of winemaking experience from around the globe, culminating with the establishment of a label all of his own.

Shaun's focus is on expressing the sub-regionality of the Yarra Valley through simply gorgeous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and a growing range of experimental wines.

With the combination of Shaun's A-grade fruit from the Yarra's top growers and his precise, astute winemaking, the value on offer in the Dappled range is second to none.

He was James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2018. The wines have only stepped in quality since then though the modest pricing remains the same. Unsurprisingly, his wines sell out in short order each year. He's now regarded as one of the best small-scale producers in the modern Yarra Valley.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
