Description

Coriole were well ahead of the curve when they planted Sangiovese in McLaren Vale back in 1985. Fast forward nearly 40 years and it’s clear they were onto something. With more than three decades of consecutive vintages under their belt, this is now one of the country’s most consistent and widely respected takes on the variety.

The Lloyd family have long believed that McLaren Vale’s Mediterranean climate was ideal for Italian grapes, and this wine proves the point. It’s medium-bodied, savoury and bright, with that classic Sangio acidity and gentle grip. No bells and whistles – just clean, honest winemaking and a deep understanding of the variety.

Whether you're already a fan of Italian reds or just starting to explore them, this is a no-brainer. Approachable, food-friendly and distinctly Australian in its confidence.

Reviews for the previous 2023 vintage:

94 points - "Coming off five sites, and seven clones, this was raised in older oak for 11 months. Referential to Tuscan origins, but its local identity firmly rooted, this is a thoroughly engaging expression, classically redolent of red cherries, woody herbs, dried flowers and a grounded, dry-toned earthiness. Spice notes, too. The varietal tannin and acid union tension the palate, with fruit contained, wound in, but not quashed. It’s approachable and fragrant, speaking of the cool year, but that immediate appeal is paired with layered detail, too." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Ever reliable, and such good value with it. Cherry, red fruits, a smattering of dried herb and aniseed, new leather, also a little ferrous. It’s medium-bodied, crisp and lively, red fruits and almond, well-etched gently sandy tannin, good length and plenty of varietal character. Good now, likely better again with another year or two in bottle." - Gary Walsh, (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Mid to deep ruby and offers up expressive aromas of cherry liqueur, soy sauce and roasted meats with genuine power and complexity. Italian styling with a structural style, al dente tannins adding upfront impact." - Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal)

92 points - "Very honest, medium-bodied sangiovese. Rose petals, crunchy red fruit and a steely, wiry, herbal tannic framework that encourages the next glass. Prosaic in the best sense. A delicious everyday wine. Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

    Great value Sangio!

I'd give this a 3.5 star rating if able - it's a lovely rendition of McLaren Vale Sangiovese and great value!

Coriole's fruit is sourced from some of the oldest producing sangiovese vines in Australia.

So well suited to the McLaren Vale region, and over 40 years of experimenting with sites, clones and rootstocks has led to this sangiovese being an Australian benchmark.

Harvested from our 12 blocks across our four McLaren Vale vineyards it is interesting to see the site and clonal variations. The blending is done in the vineyard to create the optimum expression of McLaren Vale sangiovese.

Coriole

Coriole is a McLaren Vale institution.

It's a winery with two sides. On one hand, they craft classic regional versions of Shiraz and Cabernet which are exemplary. On the other, they have been a trailblazer for emerging varieties (Italian varieties, in particular) in Australia.

Owner and winemaker, Mark Lloyd was one of the first in the country to experiment with Sangiovese and Fiano and has been hugely influential in bringing these varieties into the Australian wine zeitgeist.

Today, Mark's son Duncan has taken over the winemaking duties and his brother Peter as General Manager. The experimentation with emerging varieties continues under their guidance with Nero d'Avola, Negroamaro, and Piquepoul having come into the fold. Coriole never stands still. They are trailblazers who have had a huge impact on the changing face of modern Australian wine.
