Description

Coriole were the first to plant Fiano in Australia back in 2001, and more than 20 years on, they’re still leading the way. The Rubato is their flagship white - a richer, more expressive take on the variety that shows just how serious Fiano can be in McLaren Vale.

The fruit comes from the estate’s original vineyard and is picked slightly riper, then given more time on skins before being fermented and matured in seasoned oak. The result is a layered, textural white that balances generosity with freshness.

You’ll find flavours of pear, quince, and citrus peel, with hints of honey, fennel and toasted hazelnut. It’s medium-bodied and long on the palate, driven by natural acidity that keeps everything in line.

The name ‘Rubato’ means to play with freedom - a nod to the more creative, hands-off approach Coriole take here. It’s an impressive, age-worthy Fiano that proves just how far this variety has come in Australia.

Deep and complex with aromas of lemon pith, pistachios, sea salt and Asian pears. The palate is medium-bodied and textural with mineral-driven notes of nectarines, grapefruit, oyster shells, fennel and quince. Quite textural with a phenolic grip that adds to the layers of complexity. Drink or hold.

A deeply fruited and textural iteration this year, while also possessing considerable verve and effortlessness. Golden delicious, nashi pear, fresh fennel seeds and fronds, green almond, lime pith, mandarin oil and a green cardamom/fenugreek leaf spice note. It’s saline and lightly chewy, working in neat concert with the fruit intensity that swells on the mid-palate, keen acidity joining the fray to close out, the flavours lingering indelibly. It’s also a wine that builds with interest over a couple of days and as the temperature climbs. It’s a beacon for the variety’s elevated potential here. Absolutely top drawer. 97 points

Peach, perfume, pistachio, mint/fennel, hard lemon sweets dusted with icing sugar. It’s juicy, apple and lime, fine powdery texture, balanced acidity, a citrus cut through marzipan richness, raw almond and green herbs, with a cool finish of superb length. Outstanding. A high-water mark for this variety.

    Best yet I think

Best vintage of this I've had to date and the '23 was quite smart too. Powdery texture, saline, nutty/almond notes with a mix of citrus/apple, mint and minerality too. Lovely phenolic grip on a long finish as well.

Tasting Notes
Rich and medium bodied with layers of flavour and texture. The Fiano Rubato boasts clean and pure aromatics of poached pear, nectarine, quince and shaved fennel. Honey, ginger and hazelnut burst from the palate, with hints of papaya, citrus and spice. The finish is long and persistent.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was picked a little riper and received more time on skins to encourage extraction, the wine is then fully fermented in seasoned oak barrels. The result is a richer and fuller expression, but still showing the vitality and freshness of the variety.
Food Pairing Notes
Fiano Rubato complements full-flavoured dishes. Pair with a roast pork with all the trimmings.
Other Notes
The grape variety Fiano originates from a province near Campania, east of Naples. Fiano was selected by Coriole when looking for a new southern Italian variety to grow in McLaren Vale, with the first vineyard planted in 2001. The first Australian Fiano was released by Coriole from the 2005 vintage. Perfectly suited to our climate, Fiano is now the largest growing whites category in McLaren Vale. In 2018 we first produced our Fiano Rubato, which celebrates Fiano's true textural qualities. The term rubato may be familiar to music lovers. It means to play freely, or with abandon... not scared to stray from the normally trodden path.

Coriole

Coriole is a McLaren Vale institution.

It's a winery with two sides. On one hand, they craft classic regional versions of Shiraz and Cabernet which are exemplary. On the other, they have been a trailblazer for emerging varieties (Italian varieties, in particular) in Australia.

Owner and winemaker, Mark Lloyd was one of the first in the country to experiment with Sangiovese and Fiano and has been hugely influential in bringing these varieties into the Australian wine zeitgeist.

Today, Mark's son Duncan has taken over the winemaking duties and his brother Peter as General Manager. The experimentation with emerging varieties continues under their guidance with Nero d'Avola, Negroamaro, and Piquepoul having come into the fold. Coriole never stands still. They are trailblazers who have had a huge impact on the changing face of modern Australian wine.
