Description

Cobaw Ridge has been in Alan and Nelly Cooper’s hands since the late ’80s, and they’ve never strayed from their path – organic and biodynamic farming, small ferments, no nonsense. Their vines sit high up on granite soils in the Macedon Ranges, one of the coolest parts of Victoria, where Chardonnay develops naturally fine acidity and depth without any winemaking theatrics.

The L’Altra Chardonnay – “the other” – is made as a more open, early-drinking style than their main cuvée. The fruit is hand-picked and wild-fermented in older oak barrels, with minimal intervention and no fining. It’s still Cobaw through and through – clean, mineral and precise – just a touch softer around the edges.

Expect fresh citrus and white peach flavours, gentle texture from time on lees, and that faint granite snap that runs through all their wines. Straightforward, beautifully made, and distinctly Cobaw.

L’altra goes white and reddish in this suite of new releases. Here’s the white (chardonnay). Meanwhile, this release also marks forty years of Cobaw Ridge winemaking! Huzzah! Alan was 28 years old at the time of the first wines, Nelly, well, less than that. Wonderful stuff.

This is so charming and delicious. It’s not afraid to be upfront, fleshy and ribald in its display of primary fruit, though likewise delivers distinct, nutty savouriness in a sugared almond kind of way, plus, a core of gingery spice, briny minerality and a faint(est) fino sherry character. Layers on layers, wonderful, evocative, potent perfume, a pulpy, juicy finish. All this spells hell yeah, and then some. Taste sensation.

Cobaw Ridge

Alan and Nelly Cooper established their Macedon Ranges vineyard in 1985. The first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region, the Coopers firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard so the vines and the integrity of their fruit are their first priorities.

They grow some of the region’s best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Australia’s most sought-after example of Lagrein. Over the years Alan's winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. With sulphur now the only addition in the winery and Alan using more inert vessels such as Qvevri, the Cobaw Ridge Wines have never looked better.

Small, family-owned, sensitively-grown, hand-crafted wines - this is why we love Australian wine.
