Description

Viognier might not get the same headlines as Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier, but it’s one of the real gems in their range. The 2024 season was kind – good spring rain, a warm but steady summer, cool nights and a calm early autumn – which meant the grapes came in ripe, balanced and full of flavour.

In the winery, Tim Kirk kept to the trusted recipe: fermenting in large French oak barrels, then leaving the wine on lees for a year to add texture and shape. It’s a style that shows off Viognier’s trademark fragrance while giving it the savoury backbone and structure that makes it such a great food wine.

The 2024 is immediately inviting, with lifted aromatics and plenty of flavour, but it’s also got the depth to age nicely if you want to put a few bottles away. Drink it now for its energy and perfume, or wait a few years and watch it gain richness and complexity. Either way, it’s another reminder that Clonakilla doesn’t just do reds brilliantly – their whites are seriously impressive too.

This is fragrant and accessible to start but then turns serious, salty, stony and dry through the finish. It also pushes long. Citrus blossoms, pears, apricot kernels and brine characters eventual evolve into a finish that’s awash with stoney, minerally character – though fragrant fruit notes keep pushing on too. Give this another year or two in bottle and it will be terrific.

Always one of Australia’s most exciting Viogniers, from the Canberra region, fermentation is in large format French oak – demi-muids and puncheons – with considerable time on lees to follow. The colour is a gleaming gold/yellow with flecks of green. The typical aromas of apricots, citrus and ginger are present in spades and there is even a pleasing flick of lemongrass and what seems to be the merest whiff of matchstick. Beautifully perfumed. This is still very young and it will surely be better in twelve months and then drink superbly for the following three to five years. A wine with bright yet unobtrusive acidity, impeccable balance, good intensity and serious length, it will only enhance the reputation of Viognier from this winery, not to mention provide wine lovers with some real pleasure.

2024 is a beautiful vintage. Good spring rain, warm summer days, cool nights and a glorious early autumn. The grapes came in beautifully ripe and full of flavour.

Barrel fermented with a year on lees in a combination French demi-muids and puncheons, this Viognier is a wonderfully aromatic, richly textured wine.

Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.
