Description

The O’Riada is the perfect entry point into the classic and iconic wines of Clonakilla. It’s named after Sean O’Riada, an Irish composer and cousin of Clonakilla founder John Kirk, whose legacy was about elevating tradition through artistry. That’s pretty much what this wine does every year.

The fruit comes from Clonakilla’s estate vineyard at Murrumbateman, along with a few trusted nearby growers, and in 2024 the conditions were spot on. A warm, balanced season with cool nights gave pristine fruit - plenty of spice and perfume, but still with that core of red fruit and energy that defines the region.

The 2024 release is a classic O’Riada - pepper, florals, dark cherries, a little earth, and great shape, even at this young stage.

We’ve been saying it for years, but it’s worth repeating: this remains one of Australia’s best-value reds, full stop. You’ll struggle to find a wine that delivers this much class for the money.

“It is one of Australian wine’s biggest bargains.”
- Nick Ryan

"This is top notch... Super release of O’Riada."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "This is top notch. It has flavour and length, but it’s the spread of that flavour and the tannin that comes with it that makes you sit up and take notice. This wine is where the smart money’s going. Cherry-plum, five spice, anise, mint, dark soy and florals, with a talc-like feel to the tannin and a general feeling of etching. Super release of O’Riada." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Given the fruit is off the estate and from three other properties, this is an excellent drink, in a finer style. A gorgeous purple-red hue and so fragrant with florals and red fruits (from raspberries to currants) all doused with baking spices and a sprinkle of black pepper. The palate is barely mid-weighted yet finely tuned with silty tannins and acidity that gives life. Up there as one of the best O’Riadas to date." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Sweet raspberry coulis, red cherry and cranberry leap from the glass, followed by a lovely countervailing of balsamic, wood smoke and woody baking spices — nutmeg, cassia bark. Things deepen with air to show cocoa powder, subtle dark chocolate, blackberry and gentle plum. Very alluring and complex. The palate is lifted and vibrant while maintaining intensity; it glides across the mouth with sweet spice, plum, blackberry, cherry cola and cocoa powder. Elegant and intense at once, with grainy, fine-but-firm integrated tannins. Cocoa powder bitterness permeates a long finish where the acid surges and rolls in waves. A classy O’Riada, and a classy wine in and of itself. Spend circa $48, cellar it, and enjoy the reward." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "This has to be a contender for best value wine of the year and is also compelling evidence of just how good the 2024 vintage was for the Canberra region. 20% whole bunch inclusion before twelve months maturation in French oak barriques, 25% of which were new. A vibrant crimson/magenta hue, the wine is very much from the bright and lifted end of the spectrum. The nose gives us notes of cassis, chocolate, blackberries, spice and plums with excellent oak integration throughout. Seamless in structure, this is exquisitely balanced with impressive length, through to silky tannins. A ten year proposition. This is always an exciting wine but this release surely has to sit amongst the very best." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

Punching above it's weight!

This is a beautiful and interesting wine to open and drink today, in fact for me it's drink on release or wait 10 years.
Floral nose, lightly spiced and good length of flavor. It's quality drinks closer to it's older sibling the SV for a third of the price. Bargain

Great Expression of Cool Climate Shiraz

Sean O’Riada is one of the heroes of modern Ireland. A talented musician and composer, he is credited with taking traditional Irish music out of the kitchens and pubs of Ireland and putting it on the concert stages of the world. He died, prematurely, in 1971, the year Clonakilla was established by John Kirk. He was John’s cousin.

2024 was a beautiful vintage. Good spring rain, warm summer days, cool nights and a glorious early autumn.

The O’Riada is a quintessential Canberra Shiraz, fully charged with spice, floral notes and ripe red fruits.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
