Description

The Isle Pinot is the flagship of the Chatto range – estate-grown fruit from Jim and Daisy’s home vineyard in Glaziers Bay, planted by hand and farmed with real care. It’s always a selection of the best-performing blocks and clones from across the site, and in 2024, it’s produced something that feels powerful and tightly coiled, but still unmistakably Chatto.

The season was dry and early, with small berries giving extra intensity and structure. This is a Pinot that feels serious from the outset – darker fruit, firm tannin, and a sense of weight that sets it apart from the rest of the lineup. Fermented wild, raised in large format oak, and bottled without fining or filtration, it’s made with a light touch, but it’s got plenty of shape and presence.

This is the wine Jim puts his name on – the one that sums up everything they’ve been working towards at the Isle vineyard since 2007. Built to age, but already impressive.

"Rich and concentrated on palate with tremendous depth of ripe cherry fruit... An extraordinary pinot of serious weight, depth, perfume and structure."

"Its cherry flavours deep and black, its smoke and spice notes diving for the depths... a hinterland of flavour, a farmer’s promise, a handshake of soil and riches."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

98 points - "Deep and brightly youthful purple colour in the glass with a big waft of smoky reduction at first sniff. The wine is rich and concentrated on palate with tremendous depth of ripe cherry fruit flavour and a pleasant backing of fine, dry tannins. There is rich, ripe black fruit underneath the sulfides but it needs airing to bring the fruit aromas out. A great complexity of flavour and bouquet is eventually revealed. The texture is wonderfully sumptuous. An extraordinary pinot of serious weight, depth, perfume and structure. (3 to 4 clones selected from the Chatto family vineyard, Huon Valley)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "This release of Chatto’s Isle Pinot Noir sits backward in the palate, with oak pushing slightly forward. It needs air and time. In pinot terms it has an imposing form, its cherry flavours deep and black, its smoke and spice notes diving for the depths. The tannin here. It bleeds earth and spice. It does not suffer fools. It doesn’t take the fruit flavours by the hand; it grabs the wine by the scruff of its neck and insists that it make good of the future. No wine is an island but this wine is an isle by name and by nature, in that it stands atop its heap and leads. There’s an authority to this wine. There’s depth, substance, a hinterland of flavour, a farmer’s promise, a handshake of soil and riches." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.
