Description

The 2024 Intrigue is one of the most limited and quietly sought-after wines in the Chatto lineup. It’s made entirely from the Isle Vineyard in Glaziers Bay, using all eight Pinot clones planted across the site – so you’re getting the full picture of what this spot can do, just in a slightly looser, more expressive frame than the flagship.

It’s named after the old Tassie racing yacht that was secretly built in the shed that’s now the winery, and the name fits – a bit under the radar, but seriously sharp. The 2024 vintage brought low yields and small berries, so there’s more depth and structure here than usual, without losing the freshness and detail that makes this wine tick.

There’s a bit of wildness, a bit of polish, and a heap of interest packed into a wine that’s made in tiny volumes and always gets snapped up fast. If you like your Pinot bright, savoury and with plenty of character, this is worth chasing.

I muttered an audible 'Oof!' when I popped this wine to my nose. I'm a sucker for that flint-struck reduction in a pinot noir, especially when it so comfortably melds with a fruit array this pure. First up, the colour is a deeper ruby here, and the fruit tone's a little darker – wild strawberry, dark cherry and dried cranberry with underlying hints of souk-like spice, pomegranate, sour cherries, amaro, wildflowers, pastis, Chinese barbecue shop, crushed stone, sous bois, nicely judged, toasty oak and earth. The palate is high fidelity and the pure fruit unfurls with detail and a stony composure. The tannins are kinetic, silty and fine and there's a minerally cadence that sails the wine along truly. Very impressive stuff.

Intrigue is a wine blended from all 8 clones off our Isle Vineyard. Named after the famed Tassie racing yacht built in secret in 1984, in the shed that is today our winery. Intrigue is a slightly lighter framed expression of our site. High toned, with a complex mix of blue fruits and fragrant spices, making for an exhilarating rush to the senses. Intrigue has a plushness that is both highlighted and tamed with the natural tension between fruit, acidity and tannin. A wine for the hedonist in us.

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.
