Description

The 2024 Bird Pinot is one of the more delicate, quietly expressive wines in the Chatto range – but don’t mistake that for simple. It comes from a high-performing old site up in Pipers River, planted back in the late ’90s by Andrew Pirie. Jim’s worked with this fruit for years now and really knows how to let it shine.

2024 was a dry, early vintage in Tassie, and it’s given this wine a little more weight than usual, while still keeping all the lift and finesse that Bird’s known for. It’s all about purity – red fruits, spice, fine structure – with nothing getting in the way. Wild fermented, matured in large old oak, and handled gently the whole way through.

This is what Chatto calls his “gateway” Pinot – and sure, it’s the lightest in the lineup, but it’s still got plenty to say. Lovely to drink now, but no rush either.

"The fruit here has a sweet edge... woodsy spice notes – crushed – a lavender note... dark cedar, smoked tobacco-like character through the finish."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Shy aromas of clean fresh red cherry to raspberry... some attractive herb touches, and firming, cleansing tannins... very smart pinot of a more delicate style."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

94 points - "The fruit here has a sweet edge but then it’s also herbal, sinewy and long. It’s classically structured, well flavoured and, even as a young wine, inherently complex. Woodsy spice notes – crushed – a lavender note, plenty of herbs and plenty of black cherry, with a dark cedar, smoked tobacco-like character through the finish. Excellent Pinot Noir. Will mature beautifully." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "Light-medium red-purple colour; shy aromas of clean fresh red cherry to raspberry aromas, some attractive herb touches, and firming, cleansing tannins to complete the picture. Very smart pinot of a more delicate style, and best served with food." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

aroma

Perfumed with heady spice and pure red fruits, cou- pled with filigree tannins.
palate

Don’t be fooled, though a lighter style of Pinot Noir, Bird has an intensity of flavour that really captivates.
vintage notes

After the driest summer on record for Tasmania, the 2024 har- vest was early right across the state. We started in the Coal River at Killara Farm on the 12th of March. The dry ‘El Niño’ conditions throughout the growing season, meant there was no disease pressure and generally very good conditions for ripening. The resulting 2024’s have more flesh and structure than the previous couple of years. Providing great early drinking plus the depth of flavour to age well. Overall, an excellent vintage for Tasmanian Pinot Noir!

Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.
