Description

PJ Charteris takes a steady, detail-focused approach with this Chardonnay. It’s all wild ferment in barrel, extended time on lees, and minimal new oak. The 2022 vintage was long and cool, which meant slower ripening and more time for flavour to develop without losing acidity.

The nose leads with ripe citrus - grapefruit, brown lime, quince - backed by hazelnut, nougat and a subtle hint of struck match. The palate is layered and savoury, with creamy texture, fine acid, and a touch of brine and sourdough through the finish. The oak sits quietly in the background, there for structure, not flavour.

It’s a straight-up, well-made Hunter Chardonnay - clean lines, plenty of detail, and built to drink well now or over the next few years.

94 points - "The cooler, wetter and later vintage made vineyard vigilance a necessity; disease was kept at bay, and plush fruit was the outcome, verging on outright tropical flavours, perhaps a hint of botrytis." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 points - "Mid-straw and bright in appearance. Aromas of peach, nectarine, nuts, melon and spice. Fresh, bright and mouth-filling, there’s lovely weight and texture. Flavours are in the stone fruit realm along with nougat and oak. Delicious." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

Ripe grapefruit, quince and brown lime sit against subtle funky complexity showing as nougat and brioche. The oak influence is indistinguishable from the yeast derived complexity. Abundant texture is tempered by limey acidity giving way to a generous finish with layers of nutty citrus complexity. A seemingly endless line of flavour persistence.

Tasting Notes
Pale to mid golden yellow with a green fleck. A confluence of ripe grapefruit, fresh quince and feijoa give way to brown lime and underlying green melon fruit aromas with a layer of hazelnut and French nougat. There is a hint of Oyster shell and subtle funky complexity with some brioche and delicate floral notes adding depth. Plush and textured entry with toasty citrus, sourdough crust and a subtle limey tang. The palate builds with a creamy texture while maintaining a vibrant acid line giving a long and focused profile. The oak influence is very subtext, and the expression is more barrel and lees over oak. Just a hint of cream brulee adding length to the acid and fruit power, this wine will evolve nicely over the next 2 to 4 years.

Vineyard Notes
The year of the stubborn La Nina, 2022 tested our vineyards and winemaking knowledge once again. The wet summer and early autumn of 2021 ensured the soil profiles remained full through the winter months mild conditions and top up rain keeping thing green. Only the late winter cool kept the vines asleep with a couple of early vines forcing the buds out in August. Budburst was well underway by the first week in September with excellent growth providing rarely seen canopy growth ensuring the old even more rarely seen Vine trimming equipment making an appearance in early summer. The rest of summer was exceptionally mild with temperatures struggling to get into the 30’ resulting in picking date later that the previously late 2021 harvest. Interestingly, the larger that usual canopies and cooler growing conditions once again gave us plush and generous flavours with low pH and low Total Acidity. This is the adnominally of this season, powerful flavour with focused yet silky acidity. It will be interesting to watch these wines age.
