Description

Jonathon Mattick has been quietly building one of Orange's most compelling Chardonnay programs at Canobolas, an historic site reinvigorated by Jono with 40-year-old vines on the red ferrosol soils of Mount Canobolas.

We visited Jono early 2026 and it really is a remarkable vineyard. Altitude, volcanic geology and organic farming make for a distinctive kind of intensity here, and the 2024 is another strong argument for both Canobolas' obvious quality and Orange Chardonnay as a whole.

Fruit was handpicked over four non-consecutive days in February from the deepest red soils on the vineyard, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Fifty percent went through natural malolactic, with the wine spending 11 months in French oak (20% new) followed by a further seven months on lees in tank before bottling unfined.

The result is a Chardonnay with real drive and presence: citrus-forward and mineral, with stone fruit adding weight through the mid-palate and a long, structured finish that reflects both the lees time and the natural acidity of the site. It's precise, long and with plenty of complexity.

One of Orange's finest!

"Power and drive now, but a bit more time in the bottle, and this will continue to unfurl. Another joyous wine from Canobolas."
- Shanteh Wale (Halliday Wine Companion)

96+ points - "A calm and temperate vintage for Orange, this was picked over four non-consecutive days. From vines planted in '85 on red ferrosol soils. Indigenous yeast ferment, 50% mlf, matured for 11 months in 20% new oak and an additional seven months on lees in stainless steel tanks. The wine opens with crumbly bedrock, marigold and banksia. Its mineral core sweeps through with riverstone and licks of lemon salt. Citron is a constant thread throughout, with undulating waves of acidity and phenolic pomelo pith to finish. Power and drive now, but a bit more time in the bottle, and this will continue to unfurl. Another joyous wine from Canobolas." - Shanteh Wale (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Chardonnay is absolutely thriving in Orange, and if you can't get your feet on the ground, grab some of this Canobolas 2024 - it's a masterclass from the comfort of your armchair. Focused, measured, layered and pure, this is an excellent example of what the district does best.

Lemon juice and lemon sorbet roll out the welcome mat as yellow grapefruit sizzles. Layers of interest unfurl in the form of custard powder and vanilla slice adding French pastry feels. White fleshed stonefruits plant themselves on the mid-palate offering some density and well-handled concentration. Sift a little further to find nougat, almond meal and a neat shimmer of praline to pique your interest. Lemon meringue hooks back around providing a credible salute on close. The length caps off an incredible wine that deserves all the praise that is heaped its way. Woah! Go here. Drink to eight years+." - Steve Leszczynski (QWine Reviews)

This is brooding and introverted though eventually it is coaxed out into being. The powerfully floral nose gives way to reveal an abundance of citrus elements overlaid with oyster shell, iodine and quinine tonic. This is followed closely by a second wave of apple, pear and white peach aromas.

There is outstanding volume to the dense, serious and tautly muscular palate that brims with both minerality and sappy lime skin extract before culminating in a linear, chiselled and even more persistent finish.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
