Description

The 2024 By Farr Chardonnay is another masterclass in precision and grace - a wine that captures the essence of this remarkable vineyard and vintage.

Grown on the exposed, north-facing limestone slope alongside the Sangreal Pinot Noir, this Chardonnay carries that signature mineral thread that seems to hum through every glass. The season offered a mild growing period with a warm finish, encouraging slow, steady ripening. It's a full-bodied Chardonnay of easy power - layered, focused, and beautifully poised.

As ever, Nick Farr’s Burgundian approach brings refinement and complexity without artifice. The 2024 release is generous in fruit, with ripe citrus, white stone fruits, and a whisper of almond meal, all wrapped around a spine of fine, saline acidity. There’s a soft texture from the slow fermentation, but it’s held tight by the wine’s underlying energy and length.

Whether you’re a seasoned Chardonnay devotee or just after a great bottle of wine, this is a brilliant expression of what Australian Chardonnay can be - thrilling now, and destined to age beautifully.

"This is tip-top chardonnay. In my version of heaven this wine would be the house white." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Yes there’s intensity of flavour, texture, complexity and length. But there’s more; there’s a distinctiveness, and that’s what sets this wine aspart. Wheat, pears, white peach, woodsmoke, grapefruit, a gentle note of brine and a miso note. It’s creamy and juicy at once but never overtly one or the other. This wine just is. It pushes flavour right up to the point of elegance and then lets elegance take over from there. This is tip-top chardonnay. In my version of heaven this wine would be the house white.

good but not worth the price

This is a very tight, energetic and zippy chardy. Honestly I wouldn't have guessed it was chardonnay if I didn't know. Its more the Chablis style, there is a touch of oak but not really present, more fruit - stone fruit mostly - nectarines and apples, almost Riesling esq. Great mouthfeel and very youthful, as others have said it would benefit from cellaring.

A great chardy, just not quiet what I was looking.

    Beautiful Chard.

Brilliant as always. Pure, focused and laser like acidity.

The trademark characteristics of the wine produced on our site are understated power and length with a mineral finish. The wine has a great fruit expression that is well integrated with French oak. The soil characteristics have come through in the style of wine we have today. The palate is fine but firm, with great acidity, texture and length. This wine is rich in flavour, yet very refined.
The By Farr chardonnay comes from the same site as the Sangreal pinot noir—composed of red soil over limestone—and was planted in 1994. The limestone of this site is not exposed on the surface as at other sites. The limestone starts 20 to 30cm below the surface, to the depths of the root zone of the vines. It is a very exposed north-facing slope. The clones used for the chardonnay are a mixture of Dijon clones and Penfolds 58.

By Farr

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in Victoria, or indeed, the country. He was responsible for taking Bannockburn in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is quite simply one of Australia's finest producers.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier. With Gary's son Nick now making the wines, as well as taking his own Farr Rising label to monumental heights, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

If you want to see one of the country's great winemaking families at work, anything by the Farrs will be one of the best examples of its kind in the country. Sheer class, guaranteed.
