Description

After making his name at Turkey Flat, Mark Bulman continues to carve out his own path with Bulman Wines - and the 2024 Gary’s Vineyard Grenache is further proof that this is one of the most exciting Grenache projects in the country.

Sourced from Gary Whaite’s Springs Hill Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, this wine comes from Grenache planted in 2007 on ironstone conglomerate mixed with sand and gravel over mottled clay. The 2024 season was warmer and drier than the previous year, shaping a wine with less spice but more inherrant power and drive.

Hand-picked on April 4th with just 5% whole bunch this year, the fruit spent 12 days on skins pre-ferment, 8 days fermenting, 61 days on skins post-ferment, and 182 days in sandstone amphora to capture the site’s character in its purest form.

It's a blistering McLaren Vale Grenache - straight to the top of the mountain. Fresh cherries, wild thyme, sage, autumn leaves, pink ginger, and pink peppercorn, with a zesty, spring-loaded palate. The tannins are fine yet assertive, leading to a long, amaro-laced finish.

A precise, elemental Grenache that is both serious and seriously delicious - a must-have for collectors following the rise of premium Australian Grenache. Extremely limited.

"Power is misleading, though, as this is just so refined, rolling through sour red cherries, dried cranberry, fresh bay and advieh spicing – cardamom, cinnamon, rose and cloves – the tannic framework so lacy and just so finely assertive. It’s early on this, but, having tasted it over a couple of days with ample air, it’s an exceptional release with a thrilling future."

"We’re watching something special grow up from the very ground... There’s both substance and lightness, grunt and run. The purity of this wine feels more like honesty. It skips over the essences and drives straight for the essential. It’s the face of character, served clean, lined deep. It’s a beauty. As in, it’s beautiful, and its quality is cracking good."

97 points - "From the Springs Hill vineyard in Blewitt Springs, with the '07-planted grenache grown by Gary Whaite. Pale in the glass, this is less effusively spicy than the '23, somewhat coiled, but with more power behind it. A story of vintage. Power is misleading, though, as this is just so refined, rolling through sour red cherries, dried cranberry, fresh bay and advieh spicing – cardamom, cinnamon, rose and cloves – the tannic framework so lacy and just so finely assertive. It’s early on this, but, having tasted it over a couple of days with ample air, it’s an exceptional release with a thrilling future." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Lots of time on skins, raised in amphora, made by an all-round class act who also a) happens to be one the better human beings you’re ever likely to encounter and b) be the first person to win the Jimmy Watson with a varietal grenache. It’s been quite a thing to watch the birth of this Bulman endeavour. We’re watching something special grow up from the very ground.

Last year I scored both the Blewitt Springs/McLaren Vale and Springton/Eden Valley releases – Glen’s and Gary’s respectively – the same, though if I was forced to choose I probably would have gone for the Blewitt. Both the 2024 releases this year are surlier than their 2023 equivalents, which isn’t a bad thing. Both these wines need lots of air and, yet better, a few years in a cool, dark, stable place.

The flavour profile, the tonic notes, the firm ribs of tannin, the way it starts to slide away and then kicks back up and then, yet still, continues with an extra drift of flavour. This is a wine to reward the patient. It tastes of fresh red cherry and red licorice, iron, plum, salted spices, dried herbs and rust. There’s both substance and lightness, grunt and run. The purity of this wine feels more like honesty. It skips over the essences and drives straight for the essential. It’s the face of character, served clean, lined deep. It’s a beauty. As in, it’s beautiful, and its quality is cracking good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

2023 Bulman Gary’s Vineyard Grenache Dry Red Wine
Rated 5 out of 5 stars
    Stunning Grenache

One of the best young Grenache's I've ever had. Finesse, elegance and wonderful texture. The nose just jumps out of the glass.

Ironstone conglomerate mixed with sand and gravel over mottled orange yellow clay at various depths. Part of the North Maslin Sand formation. 200m Altitude. Sitting on a ridge above and benefitting from the orographic lift of McLaren Vale. Facing North on a gentle slope above the Onkaparinga Gorge. Dry grown.
Gary Whaite grew the Grenache for the 2024 Vintage.

2024 Gary’s Vineyard Grenache – Picked on 4/4/24. 5% Whole Bunch. 12 days on skins pre-ferment, 8 day ferment, 61 days on skins post ferment. 182 days in a sandstone amphora.
The 2024 vintage was much drier and warmer than 2023. The resultant wines have less spice but more inherent power. Less whole bunch was used to push the fruit and tannin forward.
Gary used a sledgehammer and pick to break the conglomerate that runs through the vineyard whilst planting the Grenache. The label is of a broken piece of ironstone conglomerate gathered from the vineyard. The broken face of the rock shows reflective fragments within the rock combined with the milky way.  Subtly embossed on the label is an image of Gary holding the sledgehammer looking simultaneously into the rock and sky at once.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
