Description

WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Semillon is the wine Brokenwood has built its name on, and the 2024 shows why they’re still leading the way. All the fruit was hand-picked from across Pokolbin, then fermented cool in stainless steel – no oak, no tricks, just clean, fresh Semillon made the way it should be.

The growing season was a bit tough, with smaller crops and earlier picking, but that’s only added to the flavour intensity. It’s crisp, bright and zippy now, with plenty of citrus and green apple vibes, and a backbone of acidity that will carry it for years if you’re patient.

Right now it’s deliciously fresh and perfect with seafood or a hot day by the coast, but tuck a few bottles away and you’ll see it turn into something layered and toasty down the track. Brokenwood keeps proving that classic Hunter Sem is still one of the best value white wines in the country.

Very crisp and clean, with green melon, citrus and hints of minerals and lemongrass. Medium-bodied, crunchy and delicious. Only 11.5% alcohol. Drink now.

Juicy, white nectarine, lemongrass, a bit of spice, lime rind. Bright, fruity, sherbetty, a fair bit of flavour here, citrus and green apple, with a light floral finish of excellent length. Delicious. Very much an each way bet for drinking or cellaring, though it’s kind of hard to resist as a young wine.

Made exclusively from hand-picked fruit sourced across the valley, this wine offers incredible value with its pure, lemony fruit, palate breadth, freshness and length. Ever-dependable and deeply satisfying, it stands out as one of the region's best buys. Gorgeous in its youth, with lime blossom and green apple notes, it will reward careful cellaring, unveiling toast and flint characters over time.

Vinification
Harvesting was almost all done by hand. The fruit was crushed, chilled, and pressed immediately. Neutral yeasts were used for fermentation in stainless steel, and the wine was bottled in May. No oak or malolactic fermentation.

Winemaker Comments
2023 was a much drier year than the previous three across Eastern Australia. Up to December 31st, 2023, Pokolbin received 663mm of rainfall—almost 100mm below the long-term average of 754mm. A very dry May through October brought only 127mm of rain, and coupled with a warmer-than-average winter, this led to early budburst and irrigation being required to get the vines established.

Windy, hot weather in mid-September impacted flowering, resulting in smaller bunch sizes, especially in Semillon. November and December returned to average rainfall, although patchy hail on November 29th damaged some sites in southern Pokolbin, particularly Oakey Creek Vineyard. Fortunately, subsequent dry weather meant the damaged fruit dried out with little impact on quality.

Despite several well-publicised storms on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the vineyards escaped relatively unscathed. Coming into the new year, fruit condition and canopy were very good, though tracking 14–21 days earlier than 2023 due to the lighter crop. Early January was incredibly hot and humid. The first Semillon was picked on January 13th, and harvest finished by Australia Day.

Across the Hunter, yields were lower than average. Semillon was particularly impacted due to the preceding three wet winters (2020–22) combined with a historically dry 2023 winter, which affected vine health and yield. Harvest was condensed, but the quality is excellent with good flavour and chemistry.

Food Pairing
Asian cuisine and any seafood, especially freshly shucked oysters.

Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
