Description

WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Brokenwood might be best known for Semillon and big Hunter reds, but they’ve also got a playful side, and the Rosato is proof. This is their ninth release, made from Sangiovese and Nebbiolo grown across NSW and Victoria – two Italian grapes that feel right at home in this bright, dry style.

The fruit gets the gentle treatment – a bit of foot stomping, some overnight skin contact, then mostly stainless steel ferment with a splash in old oak for texture. Bottled in time for spring, it’s a wine made with long lunches in mind.

The 2024 is fresh, floral and just a little savoury, with enough weight to make it food-friendly but still light enough to drink on its own. It’s crisp, refreshing and really easy to like – the sort of bottle you’ll want a second of on the table.

It is made from sangiovese and nebbiolo from NSW and Victoria, with foot-stomping used on specific parcels. Super classy, bright and dry with picture-perfect colour and a weighty, satisfying palate. The persistence of the flavours truly sets it apart. Partial old oak fermentation adds nuances of savoury complexity. It is refined, great value and delicious.

Winemaker Comments
Brokenwood’s ninth make of the popular Rosato. The wine is named Rosato (Italian for Rosé) as it is a blend of the Sangiovese and Nebbiolo varieties. Stylistically it is European, with fruit sweetness but a dry finish. The actual residual sugar is zero. The aim was to make a savoury wine that could withstand being chilled, with plenty of florals and texture on the palate. Enjoy!

Food Pairing
Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are two of the main grapes of Western Italy, and you can’t go past their famous cuisine—particularly antipasti and grissini (the metre-long breadsticks). Salumi wouldn’t go astray either.

Production
There are a number of methods of making Rosato, including juice run-off from the red grapes or blending. For this wine, the fruit was partially crushed by foot stomping, then left to steep overnight on skins. The grapes were pressed to tank and the juice dispatched to the Hunter Valley. A small portion was fermented in old oak, but the majority was fermented in stainless steel tank. Bottled in August 2024, just in time for Spring.

Drink
Best consumed over the short to medium term.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
