Description

WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Chardonnay might not get the same spotlight at Brokenwood as their famous Semillon or Graveyard Shiraz, but this release shows just how good they are at it.

The 2024 comes mainly from the cool-climate Indigo Vineyard down in Beechworth, where a tough season kept yields low but delivered fruit with heaps of flavour.  The remainder a blend of Yarra Valley and of course Hunter Valley fruit.

Winemaking is kept simple and smart – mostly barrel ferment with just a touch of new oak and a bit in stainless to keep things fresh. The style is all about brightness and drinkability, with the oak there in the background adding a little polish without getting in the way.

The end result is a Chardonnay that’s crisp, balanced and quietly classy, with more than enough character for the dinner table but still easy to enjoy on a Tuesday night. Super value.

The Wine Front 92 Points

This is a fresh style of chardonnay with very good fruit flavour. It’s not overly complex but it’s beautifully turned out and, courtesy of both its flavour generosity and its all-round harmony, I admire it quite a lot. Grapefruit, peach and pear characters are presented bright and juicy, with cedar, spice and flint notes working away as whispers. This is the kind of quality chardonnay that will please all-comers.

Vinification
The wine underwent oxidative handling, leading to low phenolic levels and enhanced complexity. Fermentation was with natural yeast in French oak barrels (22% new), with a small portion fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Winemaker Comments
Brokenwood, along with many Chardonnay producers, is harvesting much earlier than 15 years ago. This is partly due to vineyards reaching maturity, providing excellent fruit flavour and concentration at lower sugar levels, and partly to retain natural fruit acidity. Consumers are also seeking more finely structured Chardonnay, with lower alcohols and less oak influence.

The 2023 vintage at Indigo Vineyard was difficult, with a severe late-season frost in October significantly affecting yields, particularly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This resulted in uneven fruit maturation, requiring slow and careful picking. Despite the reduced yields, fruit condition was good, and harvest commenced under clear skies.

Food Pairing
Rich seafood, pasta, and light meat dishes.

Drink
Drinking very well now or over the short term.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
