Description

The Bondars don’t miss. Year after year, Selina and Andre turn out wines that hit the sweet spot between polish and playfulness - and the 2024 Junto GSM might just be their most drinkable release yet.

‘Junto’ - Spanish for ‘together’ - says it all: this is Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz in easy, delicious harmony. It’s a wine built for bistros and backyard hangs, with Grenache doing the heavy lifting on the perfume and juiciness, while Mataro lends savoury grip and Shiraz brings its usual plush generosity to the party. All of it aged in old French oak so nothing gets in the way of the fruit.

It’s supple and medium-bodied, red-fruited and spicy, with a savoury lick that keeps it fresh and bright. No heaviness, no fuss - just pure, unfussy McLaren Vale deliciousness.

In a region that so often leans into power, this shows just how much charm and character can come from restraint. You’ll want more than one bottle.

"A Southern Rhone style blend that is intended to be unpretentious and easy to drink.."

"Red berries, cherries, cranberry, musk, rose, and a dukkah-like toasted nut and spice note… Lithe and textured with silky ribbons of fruit and finely tooled grip. A pure delight, year in, year out."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "78/12/10% grenache/mataro/shiraz. This is the first year the mataro has usurped the shiraz in the blend; eight months in neutral oak for about eight months. This is such a joyful wine, year in, year out. Here again, the pleasure resides. Popping with red berries, cherries, cranberry, musk, rose and a dukkah-like toasted nut and spice note, if that’s not too much of a stretch. It’s lithe, textured with silky ribbons of fruit marshalled by finely tooled grip. There’s nothing from this address that isn’t top drawer, regardless of style, and this is such a pure delight." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Fine-grained wine. Elegant. Lengthy. And lovely. This is a grenache-mataro-shiraz blend from McLaren Vale that I loved drinking. It tastes of raspberry, red cherry, sweet spice and purple flowers, and it feels tight and exactingly-well-crafted throughout. Reduction has been put to positive – though modest– effect too, adding a slight smokiness, and adding to that tight, dry impression. If you like the light-spicy-structural style, you'll love this." - Campbell Mattinson

90 points - "A fresh and lively wine. Has something of a petrichor character, that thing when rain hits a hot road, which I like very much. I also associate it with ozone, which is the smell when a storm rolls in and lightning starts to strike. All that nonsense aside, it’s red fruited, cranberry and raspberry, a light spiciness with some gum leaf perfume. Medium-bodied, crisp and crunchy, some Spanish black olive lends a slightly metallic and savoury element, and it sports pepper dusted strawberry and orange peel on a finish of solid length. Light and frisky, but a nice wine. Easy to like." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    A very good GSM

It's really good. It's a bit 'different' from what I'm used to drink but doesn't suffer in comparison. Give it a go and you 'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Grenache (78%), Mataro (12%), Shiraz (10%).

A Southern Rhone style blend that is intended to be unpretentious and an easy to drink, bistro style. The Grenache leads the blend with its pretty red fruits and perfume, and the other varieties help to 'complete' the wine, elevating it to a more complex and balanced place. The Mataro gives savoury spice and structure, and the Shiraz adds juicy flesh. The wine is aged entirely in old French oak hogsheads to allow gentle micro-oxygenation without contributing any overt oak flavour.

Bondar Wines

Andre & Selina Bondar are one of the great modern Australian wine success stories. We have been massive fans of their wines since their very first vintage and tell anyone who will listen that if you want to taste what modern McLaren Vale wines are all about then this is who you need to try.

Their home block, the highly decorated Rayner Vineyard, which straddles the Blewitt Springs and Seaview sub-regions of The Vale, was originally planted back in the 1950s but the Bondar family chapter in that vineyard's story will be its most significant. Dre and Sel's wines are honest and vibrant, built more on freshness and digestibility rather than raw South Australian power.

They make brilliant, vibrant Grenache, balanced and concentrated Shiraz, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and one of the country's most bankable Rose wines plus a raft of small-batch alternative varieties. Their range nails quality and drinkability at every turn.
