Description

When Piero Incisa della Rocchetta decided to plant Chardonnay in Patagonia’s Río Negro Valley, he enlisted the help of Meursault’s Jean-Marc Roulot — a partnership that’s since become one of the most exciting cross-continental projects in modern wine. The fruit for this release comes from 40-year-old vines rooted in mineral-rich soils with alluvial stones and a layer of limestone. Everything is farmed organically and biodynamically.

Fermentation and maturation are split between concrete eggs, stainless steel, and seasoned French oak, giving the wine energy, purity, and just enough texture. The style is taut and mineral-driven, with citrus and white fruit at its core, subtle floral lift, and a fine, chalky line through the palate. There’s a quiet depth here that speaks to both the vineyard and the guiding hand in the cellar.

Production is tiny and allocations even smaller. It’s a distinctive, precise Chardonnay that captures both Patagonia’s natural freshness and Roulot’s finesse.

98 points - "Aromas of honeysuckle, limes, green apples and a hint of cedar. It’s medium-bodied yet very dense and compact on the palate. It’s like a tight fist with the fruit and fine phenolics. Long finish. A structured and impressive young wine. Drink in two or three years." - JamesSuckling.com

96 points - "White fruit, almond, vanilla wafer, a honey white flower perfume, stony, a little dusting of pepper. Lime in water, very cool feel, very tight, peppermint tea, white blanched almond, bright and long with a finish of really excellent length. Super. Tense. An outstanding, yet restrained Chardonnay of impeccable presentation and wonderful character." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Sourced from silt-dominated soils, the 2024 Chacra Chardonnay opens with an immediately inviting and complex bouquet melding marshmallow, saline and citrus notes with ever-increasing definition and harmony. The palate echoes with a deep, velvety, effortless richness perfectly counterbalanced by a chalky, lifted, tangy energy. It concludes with a multidimensional, bright, mineral-drenched finish further elongated by additional rounds of stony intensity without ever veering into sharp or angular territory. It's an impressive, crystalline and simply delicious expression of Patagonia." - Matthew Luczy (The Wine Advocate)

Done in collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot, is produced from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. The wine is intense and energetic, high pitched and lively, round and austere, refined and mineral. It has a dry mouthfeel and a saltiness natural to the area.

Bodega Chacra

Bodega Chacra is located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, in the dead centre of Argentina.

Founded in 2003 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta - the grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, creator of Sassacaia, one of the monuments of Italian wine. After trying a Patagonian Pinot at a tasting in NYC, Piero began searching for site in the Rio Negro region, a search that bore fruit in the Mainque area. He took over a site with ungrafted vines dating back to 1932, and the development of a world class winery too shape, with a focus on organic and biodynamic viticulture.

He brought legendary Meursault producer Jean-Marc Roulot on board to aid in the planting and vinification of Chardonnay - not a bad advisor! Piero's dedication to producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay was rewarded when Chacra Treinta y Dos Pinot 2018 was named Best Wine in the World by James Suckling.
