Description

Bodega Chacra is tucked away in Patagonia’s Río Negro Valley, a cool-climate spot that’s become one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most exciting addresses for Pinot Noir. Piero Incisa della Rocchetta planted the Barda block in 1990, using cuttings from the estate’s original ungrafted vineyards from the 1930s and 1950s. Everything here is farmed organically and biodynamically.

Barda is the most approachable wine in the range — made to be enjoyed young, but with the detail and pedigree that comes from great fruit and gentle handling. Fermentation is with wild yeasts and a small portion of whole bunches, before maturing in equal parts concrete and French oak, with only a whisper of new wood.

It’s bright and pure-fruited — red cherry, cranberry, a touch of spice — with silky tannins and fresh acidity. Nothing heavy, nothing overworked, just a clean, graceful expression of place that happens to be seriously good value for the quality on offer.

"Subtle cherry, cranberry, strawberry and a hint of peaches. Bright, lively and super drinkable."

94 points - "Perfumed, with subtle cherry, cranberry and strawberry aromas and a hint of peaches. Medium-bodied with brightness and freshness. Vivid, lively, crunchy and fresh. Always excellent and super drinkable. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

92 points - "Sourced from younger plantings at the estate with declassifications from the upper-level bottlings, the 2024 Barda is a pitch-perfect introduction to the Chacra range. It leads with a radiantly floral and red-fruited bouquet supported by smoky, earth-tinged accents while sacrificing no purity. The palate is silky and suave, smoothly flowing into a balanced, persistent finish. It fermented with 15% whole clusters and matured in equal parts cement amphora and barrique, of which 10% was new." - Matthew Luczy (The Wine Advocate)

Very tasty drop.Shows what can be done in the cool climate areas of South America.Worth trying

Pure, minerally and powerful, with concentrated flavors of red plum and dried raspberry, loaded with powerful meaty notes. Sandalwood accents linger on the finish, showing caressing tannins.

Its structure being rather airy and open, Barda was conceived to be consumed while still fresh and young. Its alcohol percentage is generally low – 12 to 13 percent. Produced from Chacra’s youngest vineyards, Barda has a strong and character and is intended to be versatile – a perfect companion for most foods. The vineyards, planted in 1990, grow on slightly sandy soils. As all our vineyards, Barda’s vineyards are ungrafted and massale selection yielding over 2 kilos per plant. It is fermented at low temperatures in round cement tanks, with natural and unfiltered indigenous yeasts.

A perfect pairing for fish, salads and omellettes.

Bodega Chacra

Bodega Chacra is located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, in the dead centre of Argentina.

Founded in 2003 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta - the grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, creator of Sassacaia, one of the monuments of Italian wine. After trying a Patagonian Pinot at a tasting in NYC, Piero began searching for site in the Rio Negro region, a search that bore fruit in the Mainque area. He took over a site with ungrafted vines dating back to 1932, and the development of a world class winery too shape, with a focus on organic and biodynamic viticulture.

He brought legendary Meursault producer Jean-Marc Roulot on board to aid in the planting and vinification of Chardonnay - not a bad advisor! Piero's dedication to producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay was rewarded when Chacra Treinta y Dos Pinot 2018 was named Best Wine in the World by James Suckling.
