Description

A couple of years on from the wine that remarkably won James Halliday's Wine of the Year, we have here another cracking release of this unique and wonderful Australian Riesling.

With ruthless grape sorting, wild ferment in the Foudre, extended time on skins and plenty of lees stirring, this Riesling is all about texture and complexity. But the thing that sets this majestic Riesling apart is the searing acid backbone which drives the wine from beginning to end.

This is one of Best's more limited release wines and is never made in large amounts, but it consistently finds itself amongst the finest Rieslings in Victoria.

Enjoy the ride.

"A pioneering wine that showed riesling in a new light, a textural and almost funky light, when the '15 vintage was released... Lemongrass, lime, pink grapefruit, honeysuckle, apple, pear and ginger light up the palate. Smooth to taste with a lovely depth of intensity, it finishes with a gently grippy resolve."

95 points - "Off the Rhymney vineyard; 24 hours on skins, pressed, fermented in large oak foudre, left on solids for six months. 10g/L RS. A pioneering wine that showed riesling in a new light, a textural and almost funky light, when the '15 vintage was released. It's changed slightly, gaining an almost off-dry status. It's not needed, but the purity of fruit and lovely textural qualities remain. Lemongrass, lime, pink grapefruit, honeysuckle, apple, pear and ginger light up the palate. Smooth to taste with a lovely depth of intensity, it finishes with a gently grippy resolve." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Excellent Australian Riesling

Bought this wine based on being the Halliday wine of the year and was not disappointed. Fresh and dry. Excellent value for money. Wish I had picked a few more bottles! Interesting to see where this wine goes with some age on it.

The nexus of value and quality

This is a superb wine. The acidity and structure of Riesling with the richness and roundness of a fine Chablis. Will no doubt be sold out by the time someone reads this review, but it should stand as a testament to future iterations.

    2021 Bests Foudre Ferment Riesling

    An unusual Aussie riesling.

    Needs food.

Surprised it was awarded Halliday wine of the year! I think this was because of it being so rare.

I prefer the unoaked riesling style, with no skins in the ferment.

The aromatic Riesling juice is given extended skin contact then wild fermented in large French oak foudre (barrels), one made by Marc Grenier in France and the other by the Schneckenleitner family in Austria.

The wine exhibits both the complexities of a barrel ferment and spontaneous fermentation without the overt oak flavour, due to the large size and subtlety of the foudre.

The Foudre Ferment is a representation of another facet of Riesling’s charms. The aromatic characteristics of this wine are best appreciated in the short to medium term, but this wine will gain complexity over time.

Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.
