Description

The 2024 Helen is Callum Powell’s tribute to his grandmother, named in her memory and labelled with one of her paintings from the ’90s. It’s a blend of Flaxman Valley and Ebenezer Shiraz - two sites that bring very different things to the table, but come together neatly here.

The season was dry, but the mild harvest meant the fruit had time to ripen slowly. That shows in the wine. It’s compact and flavourful, not heavy. Red and blue fruits lead, with some darker edges - think mulberry, black cherry, and a bit of liquorice and spice. There’s a fine grain to the tannin, and the acidity keeps things moving. You get a nice balance of structure and drinkability.

Callum’s kept the oak light - most of it older - and a portion saw time in concrete to hold onto that clarity. It drinks well now with a bit of air, but it’ll reward time too. Just 893 bottles made.

"This is sumptuous and satisfying. A haze to texture, a sheath of fine, silty tannin, a sense of coolness and richness, curiously meshed, red fruits, blue fruits, then choc-liquorice, some smoked paprika, charry spice, and a flourish of inky mulberry and salted liquorice to finish. Dried leaves, turned earth, brambles, a bit of bit tongue bloodiness also make landfall. A touch of cedar and clove too, plus some grip from those characters. Lots on. Lots! There’s a sense of levity to this wine, it lifts and lifts, that swish to texture is loose and pleasing. Much charm."

Agricola

Agricola Vintners, led by Callum Powell, marks a new chapter in the Powell family's history in the Barossa Valley. After working alongside his father, Dave Powell of Torbreck, Callum now creates his own legacy, sourcing fruit from family vineyards and renowned sites like Hoffmann.

Callum’s winemaking journey started in childhood and includes valuable experiences in the Rhône Valley with Jean-Louis Chave. This background instills a deep respect for terroir in his work in Barossa and Eden Valleys.

At Agricola Vintners, Callum focuses on Shiraz, using minimal intervention to let the fruit shine. His wines blend grapes from exceptional vineyards, resulting in complex, vibrant flavors without heavy oak influence.

Callum employs 100% whole bunch fermentation and natural processes, maturing wines on gross lees for 12 months. This approach produces bright, expressive wines that capture the essence of the Barossa with a fresh perspective.
