Description

The home wine of sorts for Callum, the Flaxman Shiraz is sourced from two vineyards: his family's old-vine home block which is over 100 years-old, and their neighbours stunning steep hillside vineyard next door.

Having an intimate, lifetime of knowledge of these two vineyards is clearly evident in the deftness of this wine. So light on its feet, and a truly unique expression of Eden Valley Shiraz. Really though, this is more Syrah than Shiraz, in the Australian understanding of the stylistic differences. Black pepper, olive tapenade, with a salinity, all dancing on top of cool black fruits.

Far out, this wine is just so damn sexy, everything about it screams drink me, drink me now. So sexy it hurts.

"These are quite something, the 2024s a cavalcade of charisma and personality, yet finesse and a showcase of high-res tannin. “How do they make it so cheap, son?”.

An experience of subtleness, which is a strange thing to say for Barossa shiraz; this is so compelling."

Dark-fruited and spice-driven, with a lovely earthy undertone and aromas of smoked meat, olive brine, blackberries and crushed stones, lifted by a floral edge. The palate is textural, with firmly framed yet integrated tannins, showing fine tension and dry, densely packed fruit without any excess fleshiness. Good density and refinement, with strong mid-palate drive. Drink or hold.

This feels more robust than previous releases of Agricola’s Flaxman Valley, yet still holds its own with tension and texture. These are quite something, the 2024s a cavalcade of charisma and personality, yet finesse and a showcase of high-res tannin. “How do they make it so cheap, son?”.

The first and foremost thing to discuss is the pixellated, fine, succulent tannin. It shapes the wine but also melts into it, lends freshness, draws comparison to Italianate endeavours and lends a freshness to each approach. A rich array of dark and brooding berry and cherry fruit, blue fruits too, Aussie bush characters, a bit of alpine herb, some turned earth, paprika-spiked salumi, roast beetroot, pepper and then elements of graphite and stone – I’m loath to push the list of descriptors but they just keep coming up. It sits low profile in the palate but manages to stain it too – almost, not quite, a pinosity, maybe cru Beaujolais, but hey, it’s its own thing too. An experience of subtleness, which is a strange thing to say for Barossa shiraz; this is so compelling.

Looking at these '24 releases from Callum Powell you can't help but think 'Jeez, the Barossa is in good hands.' The fruit purity is off the charts in these wines. The Flaxman Valley release represents a 'home' wine for Powell – it's in his hood. There's a wide brushstroke of dark plum and red fruits, etched with spice, moody amaro tones, some sage, cold tea, meadow flowers, hanging game meats and crushed rock. There's an elasticity to its palate shape with fine, powdery tannins shaped around the pure fruit in a kinetic fashion and the finest, laciest of acid lines bringing everything together. It's a hypnotically delicious wine and I found myself drawing needless comparisons ... 'yeah, it's kind of St. Joseph-y ... yeah, nah ... it's totally Agricola Vintner-y'. A stunner.

    Barossa Shiraz

I sampled this wine via coravin and it offers a very attractive profile right now.

The aromas are rich with notes of plum and dark cherries, by a hint of licorice, a characteristic I love and a savoury touch of olive.

The wine is medium-bodied and approachable tannins. While enjoyable today, this wine clearly has more to give. For those with patience I recommend keeping it for another 5 years or so

2024 was a considerably dry growing season, though a mild harvest led to small crops of intensely flavoured, well ripened fruit. The wines are built well for the cellar, but with a decant will provide enjoyable drinking in their youth.

The wines have experienced a 14-to-15-month élevage largely in seasoned oak. 25% of this year’s Flaxman Valley shiraz has been matured in a Nomblot concrete egg to maintain the purity and finesse that these high-country vines have to offer.

2024 Helen has been made in memory of my grandmother Helen Powell and the artwork is her painting “Summer Vines”, 1994. She had an inspiring creative spirit, and I hope to carry this on for her. The wine is a blend of Naimanya from Flaxman Valley, Eden Valley and Adrian Hoffmann’s Limit Lodge in Ebenezer, Barossa Valley.

Agricola

Agricola Vintners, led by Callum Powell, marks a new chapter in the Powell family's history in the Barossa Valley. After working alongside his father, Dave Powell of Torbreck, Callum now creates his own legacy, sourcing fruit from family vineyards and renowned sites like Hoffmann.

Callum’s winemaking journey started in childhood and includes valuable experiences in the Rhône Valley with Jean-Louis Chave. This background instills a deep respect for terroir in his work in Barossa and Eden Valleys.

At Agricola Vintners, Callum focuses on Shiraz, using minimal intervention to let the fruit shine. His wines blend grapes from exceptional vineyards, resulting in complex, vibrant flavors without heavy oak influence.

Callum employs 100% whole bunch fermentation and natural processes, maturing wines on gross lees for 12 months. This approach produces bright, expressive wines that capture the essence of the Barossa with a fresh perspective.
