Description

Sourced solely from the Hoffmann’s vineyards in Ebenezer, Callum Powell isn’t joking around with his fruit sources for his young Agricola label.

The Hoffman family have been farming their land since the 1850’s, and their fruit is some of the most prized in the Barossa, supplying a bevy of cult producers in the region.

This wine has classic regional character; powerful, dense and full of intensity, yet showcases a lighter, lower alcohol side of the Barossa, and still, with a powerful tannin structure.

With a fine acid-line, brightness and energy, alongside classic Ebenezer boldness and black fruit, this is a gun Shiraz for the modern consumer.

"Phwoar ... this is an Ebenezer-born shiraz that has considerable heft and power, while retaining a cadence and line that brings clarity and detail to its form. Yeah, sign me up for that.

There’s a lot of viticultural and winemaking history behind this wine, and it shows. Powerful yet floral and refined, with aromas of blackberries, bitter chocolate, licorice, cured meat, olive brine and mulberry confit. The palate is densely packed, with a restrained palate, firmly framed yet finely tuned tannins and a fine line of acidity. Made from the famed Hoffman Dallwitz and Dimchurch blocks, planted in 1880 and 1951. Excellent. Drink or hold.

Phwoar ... this is an Ebenezer-born shiraz that has considerable heft and power, while retaining a cadence and line that brings clarity and detail to its form. Yeah, sign me up for that. The soils are all red clay and ironstone over calcrete; that subregional sense of compression, bunchy nuance and the ferruginous baseline runs strong here. But there's something different. There's freshness and a little more light shining in than is the norm for its northern Barossa brethren. The dark plum and blackberry fruits are studded with exotic spice, peppercorn, pan juices, dark chocolate and earth; it's all there but there's lift and a pleasing pace. Yeah, this is a good'un alright.

It’s hearty stuff, boot polish and black plum, garam masala and cedar with liquorice in the mix. Chunky but fresh, for this suite of wines, lots of depth and character, the finish briny and herbal with Dutch liquorice lingering. It’s fragrant, packs in stacks of character, feels a little warming and tannins somewhat sticky, but par for the course for this heartland stuff, and the intensity and drinkability is great.

One of my favourite wines this year. Really delicious and interesting. Not big, but deep flavours and lots of layers. Brilliant.

2024 was a considerably dry growing season, though a mild harvest led to small crops of intensely flavoured, well ripened fruit. The wines are built well for the cellar, but with a decant will provide enjoyable drinking in their youth.

The wines have experienced a 14-to-15-month élevage largely in seasoned oak. 25% of this year’s Flaxman Valley shiraz has been matured in a Nomblot concrete egg to maintain the purity and finesse that these high-country vines have to offer.

2024 Helen has been made in memory of my grandmother Helen Powell and the artwork is her painting “Summer Vines”, 1994. She had an inspiring creative spirit, and I hope to carry this on for her. The wine is a blend of Naimanya from Flaxman Valley, Eden Valley and Adrian Hoffmann’s Limit Lodge in Ebenezer, Barossa Valley.

Agricola

Agricola Vintners, led by Callum Powell, marks a new chapter in the Powell family's history in the Barossa Valley. After working alongside his father, Dave Powell of Torbreck, Callum now creates his own legacy, sourcing fruit from family vineyards and renowned sites like Hoffmann.

Callum’s winemaking journey started in childhood and includes valuable experiences in the Rhône Valley with Jean-Louis Chave. This background instills a deep respect for terroir in his work in Barossa and Eden Valleys.

At Agricola Vintners, Callum focuses on Shiraz, using minimal intervention to let the fruit shine. His wines blend grapes from exceptional vineyards, resulting in complex, vibrant flavors without heavy oak influence.

Callum employs 100% whole bunch fermentation and natural processes, maturing wines on gross lees for 12 months. This approach produces bright, expressive wines that capture the essence of the Barossa with a fresh perspective.
